It’s never too soon to revisit the Christmas season, and with the news of a Dr. Seuss classic getting a new sequel, well — we’ve been singing a particular Grinchy tune all afternoon. That’s right; the Grinch is taking us on another Christmas adventure this year, and it’s sure to be the sequel we never knew we needed.
The follow-up story with Mr. Grinchy and his gang of Whos seems less lively than we might have hoped for, but we have a feeling we’ll end up with that happily ever after towards the end, especially if Cindy Lou Who has anything to do with it. AP News reports that Alastair Heim is writing How the Grinch Lost Christmas with Aristides Ruiz illustrating it, and both have worked in the incredible world of Dr. Seuss before. In fact, Heim spoke about his wonderful experience when revisiting that realm of space.
“All throughout writing the story, I couldn’t fully believe that I was actually getting to play in the amazing creative sandbox Dr. Seuss created all those decades ago.”
Ruiz elaborated more on what it felt like to jump into the world-renowned story of the Grinch and how it was something otherworldly and a more challenging set of circumstances than he initially anticipated.
“When I heard of the opportunity to be a part of this project, I jumped at the chance only to find that it was difficult and daunting to approach adding to or expanding such an esteemed and treasured part of the American Christmas canon.”
How the Grinch Stole Christmas is, indeed, a treasured part of the Christmas experience, and it makes sense that joining the world would be an exciting yet heavy undertaking. Ruiz and Heim are no strangers to Dr. Seuss’ imagination and the wild and beautiful world born from it, but navigating that territory is still tricky.
So, what story will we be met with when we revisit the Grinch as he’s made friendships with the citizens of Who-ville? USA Today shares that we’ll meet with the Grinch a year after the story he’s best known for, and he’s got a very special mission on the horizon.
“The Grinch plans to win over the rest of Who-ville by proving his love for the holiday. To do so, he sets out to win Who-ville’s Christmas Crown by ‘making the largest, most spectacular Christmas tree the Whos have ever seen!'”
So why would a story with such a hopeful message be called How the Grinch Lost Christmas? Well, we’ve all heard the age-old adage that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and it seems like that’s precisely the conundrum the Grinch will face when we revisit our old friend.
How the Grinch Lost Christmas is set to release on Sept. 5, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it.
