A pointed video making fun of American culture has gone viral with over 8 million views as tensions between Greenland and the U.S. grow over President Donald Trump’s plans to acquire the territory. Greenlanders are using social media to mock American culture in ways that are hard to ignore.
According to Newsweek, the video, posted on TikTok by @pov_fromarctic, shows two people imitating the Fentanyl Fold. This is the posture where people under the influence of opioids bend over at the waist. They captioned the clip “Bringing American culture to Greenland.” The comment section filled with people, including Americans, joining in on the joke. One user wrote, “As an American, I was unfamiliar with Greenland’s humor game. Well done, carry on.”
The humor connects directly to growing geopolitical tension. President Trump has recently pushed harder to acquire Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. The president says the U.S. needs the territory for security reasons, arguing that Copenhagen can’t defend it properly. This situation is testing U.S. alliances, NATO unity, and global politics because it marks a serious divide among ideologically aligned leaders.
Greenlanders show strong opposition to U.S. acquisition plans
Greenlanders clearly don’t want to join the U.S. A survey from January 2025 showed that only 6 percent of Greenlanders support becoming part of the United States. This strong opposition is driving viral posts and public actions far beyond the initial TikTok video.
Pushback has spread across the globe. Someone heckled at an NBA game in London, yelling “Leave Greenland alone” while the American anthem was reportedly being booed. “Make America Go Away” hats are circulating online as a direct spoof of the MAGA slogan, with profits supporting Greenland. Even Miss Greenland made a public speech online against the president’s proposal this year.
Local creators are speaking up about Indigenous rights and the dangers of annexation. Paninnguaq Heilmann-Sigurdsen, shared a video on Instagram with the message, “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders.” The phrase “Just two baddies who hate ICE and MAGA staring back at each other” is gaining popularity in anti-Trump social media circles. Critics have been comparing ICE agents to the Gestapo in recent controversies surrounding the administration’s policies.
President Trump addressed the situation at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He stated that he wouldn’t use force to acquire the territory, saying, “We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable. But I won’t do that.”
“That’s probably the biggest statement I made because people thought I would use force,” he continued. “I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force. All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland.” Meanwhile, a communist flag flew at a historic U.S. site as protests against current policies continue nationwide.
