How long will fans have to wait for Squid Game Season 4?

All games must end.

The hit Netflix series ‘Squid Game’ is getting ready to wrap up its main story. Season 3 is set to premiere on June 27, bringing the story of Seong Gi-hun and his time in the deadly games to a close. Fans who have been following the show since its first season are now wondering what comes next for the popular series.

According to TV Insider, Season 2 of ‘Squid Game’ dropped in late 2024 and showed viewers more of the brutal competition. The season ended with Gi-hun’s failed attempt to stop the games during his second time as a player. Many characters died in the bloody finale, including some of Gi-hun’s closest allies and his real-life best friend. The upcoming third season will pick up right where the second season left off.

Unfortunately, fans asking how long they will have to wait for ‘Squid Game’ Season 4 will be disappointed to learn that there are no current plans for another season. The show’s creators have made it clear that Season 3 will serve as the final chapter of the main series, with creator Hwang Dong-hyuk expressing fatigue about the franchise, saying he’s ‘so sick of Squid Game’ and wanting to escape to a remote island. This means the story of Gi-hun and the original ‘Squid Game’ will come to an end after the third season airs.

Spinoffs and future projects may continue the ‘Squid Game’ world

While the main series is ending, the ‘Squid Game’ universe is not disappearing completely. Netflix has already created one successful spinoff called ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’. This reality competition show featured 456 real contestants playing similar games to those in the original series, but without the deadly consequences, though the spinoff was initially met with criticism and controversy. The winner, Mai Whelan, took home a prize of $4.56 million. A second season of this spinoff is already in the works, with casting now closed.

The creator of ‘Squid Game’, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has shared his thoughts about possibly returning to this world in the future. He told The Hollywood Reporter that any new content would focus on different characters and storylines. “If I ever wanted to go back to the world of ‘Squid Game’, it would be about different characters with a different story arc. Some kind of spinoff, maybe. For example, the masked guards. How did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe,” he explained.

Another idea the creator is thinking about involves the time gap between the first and second seasons. He mentioned exploring what happened during the three years between those seasons. “One of the ideas I’m tossing around is what happened between Season 1 and 2. There’s a three-year gap. So, for example, what was the Front Man doing during those three years? What was the Recruiter doing?” Hwang said. He added that he likes to explore different ideas during his free time and remains open to new possibilities for the franchise.
