‘I can only imagine’: California kids on Easter egg hunt stumble across infant’s skull buried in the ground

A grim Easter surprise.

Long Beach police are investigating what appears to be human remains, possibly belonging to a small child, discovered by a family during an Easter egg hunt near DeForest Park in California. The shocking find happened on Sunday afternoon when children, instead of finding Easter eggs, came across what the family believes to be a small child’s skull and other bones.

According to The Mirror, officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to the scene at the 5900 block of De Forest Avenue around 5 PM after receiving a call about the discovery. Aerial video from the scene shows several colorful Easter eggs scattered near what looks like a partially unearthed skull in the ground. Police officers were seen placing a canopy over the object to secure the area and protect potential evidence.

While confirmation from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office is still pending, the family reportedly told a local news outlet off-camera that the objects appeared to be “the human skull and other bones of a small child.”

The discovery has deeply shaken the local community

Marc Zaldana, who was walking a nearby trail shortly after the discovery, said he saw the family “freaking out a little bit.” He added, “I can only imagine, like for them, finding a dead, another kid. Must be tragic for them.”

Local resident Jessica Flores also expressed her dismay to a news affiliate, saying nothing like this has ever happened in the area before. “It hurts because if it’s a child, that’s very sad,” she said. California has seen other deeply troubling cases recently, including a case where a newborn died after a circumcision procedure that left parents with serious questions about what happened.

Police have confirmed that officers remained on the scene at De Forest Park while waiting for the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office to respond. A police spokesperson noted that they would not be sharing many updates at this time, as the investigation is active and ongoing.

Investigators still need to confirm whether the remains are human, determine how long they have been at the location, and establish whether there is any connection to a crime or a missing persons case. California has also been in the news for other unsettling stories, such as a salon accused of severely damaging a client’s hair in a dispute that took a dramatic legal turn. The investigation is continuing, and no further details have been released at this time.
