A man who recently reported a stolen iPad says the mystery escalated after he discovered a small black device hidden under his couch. He discovered what it was and linked it to his open relationship.
In a viral Reddit post, user CuddieRyan707 described finding what he called “a little rechargeable black square with a charging port on it” inside his home following a break-in. “I recently had someone break into my house and steal an iPad. I’m wondering if it’s related,” Comments called his situation “insanely dangerous.”
Meanwhile, suspicious activity involving the missing iPad preceded the discovery. In a follow-up comment, CuddieRyan707 explained that a notification told him that an iPad had connected to his Apple account. He said the device had been sent to him for free after signing a cable contract, but that he never set it up. “It came in the mail, and I just tucked it away in the shoe rack by my front door.”
Soon after, he noticed unusual activity. “But then I noticed someone was in my iMessages deleting stuff. I took action immediately and killed the iPad so it couldn’t be used anymore and deleted it from my Apple account.”
He assumed the iPad was a loss and focused on securing his home. “My new locks just came in, and I’m gonna change all of them in my house. I also got some cameras and haven’t had any strange activity going on.”
Then came the discovery under the couch
The situation took a turn, however, when CuddieRyan found the mystery box under his couch. “I’m positive it’s a recording device now that activates when sound is detected,” he wrote, speculating that the files could provide answers. “Super curious to see what’s on it cause I feel like it would give me the answers I need cause the files should have dates with them.”
One commenter warned: “Dude I don’t know [if] you’re playing cool or [if] you really are unaware. This is insanely dangerous to you.”
The comment added,
“Someone has been in your house to drop off surveillance equipment they intend to return for. Someone is in your accounts. You don’t know who. And this is someone determined and intimately invested in your life. It’s not law enforcement. It’s someone you know, and you have no idea it is them, which means they are unhinged.”
However, in a later update, CuddieRyan707 revealed that the truth was far less sinister—though still awkward.
“Okay everybody the long awaited update is finally here,” he wrote. After plugging the device in, he found “14 audio files each 20 mins long.” He said the device “belongs to a girl I’ve been casually seeing, who is in an open relationship.”
“The initial files are just her car ride up to see me. Most of it is us just talking and watching shows, and there is a little bit of uhh… use your imagination,” he wrote.
While he admitted he still doesn’t fully understand how the device ended up under his couch, he no longer believes it is connected to the stolen iPad.
He speculated that it may have fallen out of her bag or that her significant other could have been involved. “Maybe her dudes getting jealous and slipped it in her bag, but then it fell out? Man I really don’t know.”
For now, the case appears to have shifted from a suspected surveillance threat to a complicated situationship—leaving the Reddit community and CuddieRyan707 with more questions than answers.
