Israel says it killed two of Iran’s most powerful officials overnight, and one of them was the man keeping the regime safe from its own people

Big blow to Iran.

Israel has announced that it killed two of Iran‘s most powerful officials overnight: Ali Larijani, the country’s security chief, and Gholam Reza Soleimani, who led the Revolutionary Guard’s all-volunteer Basij force. These strikes mark a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, directly targeting high-profile figures within the Iranian leadership.

The killing of Ali Larijani, if confirmed by Iran, would be one of the most prominent assassinations of Iranian leadership since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died in a targeted strike. Larijani was a highly influential figure, serving as Iran’s security chief, a former nuclear negotiator, and a close ally of the late Khamenei. According to Newsweek, he was even considered a serious contender to lead the regime in the days following Khamenei’s assassination.

Iran’s leadership has been in turmoil since Khamenei’s death. Tehran announced Mojtaba Khamenei, the former supreme leader’s son, as the new leader. However, Mojtaba has not been seen in public since his appointment, despite issuing written statements, leading to widespread speculation about his whereabouts.

Larijani’s death is a serious blow to a regime already struggling to project strength

Larijani was last seen in public as recently as last Friday, joining other senior Iranian government officials at Al Quds Day parades in central Tehran. That appearance was widely seen as a show of defiance against continued U.S. and Israeli attacks. His reported killing now significantly undercuts those projections of strength.

He was among the most high-profile figures in Iran, having led nuclear negotiations with the U.S. in the weeks leading up to the outbreak of war on February 28. He was widely regarded as a pragmatic but nationalistic figure who was deeply familiar with Iran’s diplomatic strategy. Reports also indicate that Israel notified the U.S. before the strikes, though the scale of the operation went far beyond what U.S. officials had anticipated.

The Israeli military also announced on Tuesday that it had killed Gholam Reza Soleimani, the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s all-volunteer Basij force, a critical part of Iran’s internal security and military structure. Israeli media reported that other senior Basij officials were also targeted in the strikes that hit senior officials in Tehran on Monday night.

These events follow a significant move by the U.S. government. Just last Friday, the U.S. had offered a reward of up to $10 million for information on senior Iranian military and intelligence officials. Larijani was specifically named as part of a list of ten figures linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted by this bounty. The broader campaign has also drawn condemnation, with a deadly strike on a girls’ elementary school killing 165 people and raising serious concerns about civilian casualties.

With the war having broken out on February 28, U.S. and Israeli strikes have been ongoing and relentless. The reported killing of these key figures is expected to have major consequences for the Iranian regime and the broader conflict.
