‘It’s not the right time’: Trump speaks out after Putin claims 91 drones were sent to attack his home, and he’s not happy about it

President Donald Trump has spoken out after Vladimir Putin claimed Ukraine launched a major drone attack on his home overnight. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the conflict getting worse. Russian officials say Ukraine targeted Putin’s state residence in Russia’s Novgorod region using 91 long-range drones.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the claim. According to Unilad, he said all the drones were shot down by Russian air defense systems before they could cause any damage. Lavrov stated there were no casualties or damage to buildings, but he warned the incident could affect ongoing peace talks.

Lavrov said Russia’s position in future negotiations would be revised because of what he called Ukraine’s shift to a policy of “state terrorism.” However, he added that Russia does not plan to completely stop talks with the US. It’s not clear where Putin was when the alleged drone strike happened.

Trump heard about the attack directly from Putin

The claim came shortly after talks between the US and Ukraine in Florida on Sunday. Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed a new peace plan to end the war. Trump addressed the situation yesterday while meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump told reporters he didn’t like what happened and heard about it in the morning directly from Putin. “President Putin told me about it early in the morning, he said he was attacked,” Trump said. He called it “no good” and said this wasn’t the right time for such actions. Reports suggest that secret negotiations in Abu Dhabi have been working toward a peace agreement.

Trump explained he had previously stopped the use of Tomahawk missiles because of the delicate situation. “It’s one thing to be offensive because they were offensive. It’s another thing to attack his house. It’s not the right time to do any of that,” he said. Trump added that he learned about the attack from Putin and was “very angry about it.” Trump has previously stated that Putin wants Ukraine to succeed, claiming Russia has Ukraine’s best interests at heart.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy strongly denied the accusation, calling it “typical Russian lies”. He said Russia was using dangerous statements to undermine diplomatic efforts with Trump’s team. Zelenskyy stated they were working together to bring peace closer.

Zelenskyy called the alleged residence strike story a “complete fabrication” meant to justify more attacks against Ukraine, including Kyiv, and to give Russia an excuse to refuse steps toward ending the war. 

He emphasized that Ukraine doesn’t take actions that could harm diplomacy and urged the world not to stay silent, saying they cannot allow Russia to undermine the work on achieving lasting peace.
