Senator Lindsey Graham called Democratic National Committee chair Ken Martin “a worthless piece of crap” on Fox News Monday night. He also told Martin to “go to hell” during the heated exchange. The outburst came after Martin compared protests in Iran to demonstrations in the United States.
Martin had posted on social media comparing Iranian protesters fighting against their government to American protesters marching after an ICE agent shot Renee Good in Minneapolis. Graham appeared on Sean Hannity’s show and immediately attacked Martin’s comparison. He said anyone comparing President Trump to Iran’s ayatollah has “the worst case of Trump Derangement Syndrome in the world.”
Graham argued that Trump is supporting Iranians who are demanding freedom from their government, as per MediaITE. He claimed the protesters believe Trump supports them and will protect them. The senator said Trump is the first president since 1979 to support Iranian people over their government leaders.
Graham’s comparison reveals deeper frustrations with Democratic leadership
The South Carolina senator accused Democrats of cheering on Hamas and criticized Martin for attacking the Iranian protest movement. Graham said Martin was “belittling the movement” because it might succeed during Trump’s presidency. He pointed out that thousands of Iranians are dying in the protests.
Graham called for action against Iran’s government infrastructure but said he doesn’t want American troops on the ground. He compared Trump to Ronald Reagan rather than Barack Obama. The senator has previously discussed how targeting one specific leader could change the Middle East situation. Fox News host Sean Hannity agreed with Graham and said Trump would use surgical strikes to stop the violence without starting forever wars.
Martin had posted on X Sunday expressing support for both Iranian and American protesters. He wrote that people in both countries are rising up against “systems that wield violence without accountability.” Martin specifically mentioned the ICE shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, where an agent shot a woman who allegedly drove toward federal officers.
After receiving criticism for his comparison, Martin defended his post hours later. He listed actions he considers authoritarian, including killing protesters and crushing dissent. Martin wrote that if comparing the U.S. to Iran makes people angry, they should ask themselves why. Graham has been vocal about Iran recently, even warning the ayatollah about Trump’s intentions regarding the regime.
Martin became DNC chair in February after Kamala Harris lost to Trump in the 2024 election. Since taking the position, he has frequently criticized Trump using strong language. He has called Trump “a dictator-in-chief” and described his administration as “fascism dressed in a red tie.” Neither the DNC nor the White House responded to requests for comment about the incident.
