‘Love and family and serve your tribe, your people’: Luke Grimes talks the central theme of ‘Yellowstone’

Luke Grimes is opening up about the core of 'Yellowstone' and it's as emotional as you'd expect.

Luke Grimes is Yellowstone’s Kayce Dutton, the charming and handsome sultry cowboy with a deep-seated level of loyalty at the core of his being. A family man through and through, Kayce is pulled in two directions throughout the series, and as the first half of season five is finally available on DVD, Grimes is opening up about the series and the character he plays.

For Kayce and everyone in the Dutton family — be it by blood, brand, or loyalty — the central theme is togetherness, from the way they navigate their lives, to the work they do, to the relationships they build. There are many family units under the Dutton umbrella, which leads to a struggle for Kayce, as Grimes opens up about in a featurette for Yellowstone season 5 shared by Entertainment Tonight.

“With Kayce, he has a hard time choosing his relationship with his father versus his relationship with his wife and son. I think it’s because it all really matters and it matters to all of the characters. That’s sort of where you get all of this really juicy drama, is that everyone is sort of fighting for their team. There’s no right team or wrong team. It’s just a bunch of people trying to figure out how to do what’s best for their own.”

Kayce has two versions of “his own” — his father and his wife, both pieces of the puzzle for Kayce, two elements that barely coexisted before but have found common ground throughout season five. Their coming together has made certain aspects of Kayce’s life easier, and while they’re not the picture-perfect family unit by any means, it’s the raw love they share for one another that makes fans adore the series so much; it’s all about family, in its good and bad moments.

“Love and family and serve your tribe, your people — that’s a huge theme in the show. With Kacey, he has a hard time choosing his relationship with his father versus his relationship with his wife and son. I think it’s because it all really matters and it matters to all of the characters.”

In hearing Grimes’ words, it hits home now more than ever that a true family was built within the Yellowverse, and it’s a shame that this chapter of their story is ending so soon.
