Man admits to car salesman he has zero plans to buy, then makes a request that leaves him asking ‘What?’

Is this guy for real?

If you’ve ever stared at a stunning performance car at a dealership, you’ve probably wondered if you can test drive it even though you can’t afford it. Most people pretend to be serious buyers just to get a few minutes behind the wheel of their dream car. But one Acura salesman recently shared a story about a customer who was brutally honest from the start.

According to Motor1, Salesman Evan, who works at an Acura dealership, posted a now-deleted TikTok video about a customer confession that left him completely confused. The customer came in through the service department but quickly walked over to the sales floor with a specific request. He wanted to test-drive an Integra Type S.

Evan had two of these specialty cars available, but they were sitting inside the showroom because of snowy weather. Since the cars only had summer tires, taking them out for a drive was already going to be difficult. Evan started asking the usual questions about what brought the man in and if he had researched the vehicle. That’s when the customer dropped the bomb.

The customer’s shocking honesty caught the salesman completely off guard

The man admitted with total honesty, “Oh no, I’m not – I’m definitely not buying one. I just wanna drive it.” Evan’s simple, confused reply summed it up perfectly: “What?” That kind of honesty almost never happens in car sales. It’s unclear if Evan let the man test drive the Type S or turned him away.

One commenter asked if this was common, saying, “Oh is that a thing?!? I want to test drive a zl1 corvette.” Evan responded that for “specialty cars, we keep miles off of them. For regular ones it didn’t matter.” This tells us the Integra Type S likely fell into that specialty car category, making the request even bolder.

The customer’s request points out the strange gray area of test drives. The average test drive lasts about 30 minutes, giving you time to check everything from seat comfort to highway speed. Experts say the test drive is about how well the car performs and whether it fits your daily needs. Unlike stories of customers who walk in ready to buy expensive luxury vehicles, this man had no intention of purchasing.

If you’re serious about buying, you should make the most of that time. Experts recommend scheduling back-to-back drives so you can compare vehicles easily. You should also plan a route that includes city streets, highways, and rough pavement to test the suspension. For those looking to save money, there are ways to get a brand new car cheaply.

Interestingly, consumer guides don’t actually say you must be a serious buyer to take a test drive. If you want to drive high-performance cars without the awkward dealership conversations, you can pay for the experience. Companies like Xtreme Xperience bring exotic cars to racetracks nationwide. For around $200 to $400 per car, you can get a few laps in a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Porsche with a professional instructor. That sounds like a perfect solution if you just want the thrill without sales pressure.
