Man says he dated a woman for 8 monthsa. Then he meets her parents and realizee he didn’t actually know her name

"That's her name. I named her."

A man says he learned his girlfriend of eight months has a full name he never heard after dinner with her parents went wrong, according to his post on Reddit by u/TheSnoopyDwelling in r/tifu. The man reportedly spent the evening asking her parents why they kept calling her Svetlana. He apparently thought they were making fun of her with a strange nickname.

He has reportedly dated his girlfriend, who goes by Lana, for eight months and finally had dinner with her parents. At the meal, her mom kept calling her Svetlana, and her dad apparently did the same a couple of times. Since he had never heard the word before, he assumed it was an embarrassing childhood nickname or an inside joke.

According to the Redditor, he noticed his girlfriend looked a bit annoyed when they used the name, which made him think they were teasing her. The man eventually asked the parents why they kept calling her Svetlana and whether they were making fun of her. “That’s her name. I named her,” her mom reportedly replied after staring at him.

He honestly thought her parents were picking on her

It turns out Svetlana is apparently her legal name, and Lana is just the name she prefers to use. The man said he felt embarrassed, as he had dated her for eight months without learning her full name. Her dad reportedly started laughing, while his girlfriend looked like she wanted to disappear.

According to the Redditor, he tried to explain that he thought they were teasing her. However, he realized this made it sound like he was accusing her parents of bullying their own daughter. He claimed the rest of the dinner was painfully awkward for everyone involved. Lana is a common short form of Svetlana, a Slavic name tied to the word for light.

His girlfriend reportedly thought the situation was hilarious afterward. However, she asked him why he couldn’t have just asked her about the name in private. Commenters on the post mostly took the mix-up lightly, with several siding with the man over his instinct to defend her.

One commenter wrote, “Hopefully, her parents think that while you may not be the brightest bulb, you will stand up for their daughter and appreciate that about you.” Another said they would be laughing right along with her dad, while a third suggested the parents probably think he is slow.

Another commenter argued that the family laughing it off says good things about them, and the same goes for him. Other relationship posts have ended far less happily. One man reportedly called off his wedding after a fight over money, while a woman allegedly reported her ex-boyfriend to his employer after their breakup.

The couple appears to still be together after the dinner, and as Lana herself found the mix-up funny, the Svetlana story is likely to resurface at her family’s gatherings for some time.
