Man tests the absolute limits of Costco’s lenient return policy and gets away with it: ‘My social anxiety could never’

She couldn't be-leaf it.

Costco has earned a legendary reputation for honoring customer refunds on virtually anything. But an alleged warehouse exchange pushed that goodwill to its absolute botanical edge. TikTok creator Elyssa Joy (@elyssajoy_) reportedly witnessed the scene firsthand and shared it with her followers.

According to Joy, shoppers in line at the Costco customer service desk were treated to an unexpected spectacle when a man hauled in an entire tree that he had evidently already planted, grown, and excavated straight from the earth. She watched in disbelief as the customer wheeled his tree directly up to the service counter, leaving a trail of loose soil across the polished warehouse floor.

The sheer audacity of wheeling an uprooted tree into a retail wholesale store naturally drew stares. But the real punchline came at the register. Rather than questioning the soil-caked root ball or turning him away, the membership desk followed standard company protocol and processed the refund without hesitation.

A soil trail led straight to the customer service counter

Costco’s generous satisfaction guarantee is widely known to cover opened goods and well-used household merchandise, except a few disappointing instances. But seeing the lenient return policy applied to living landscaping still catches onlookers off guard. “ I saw the funniest thing today, and I thought, who would I be if I didn’t share it with you?” Joy told viewers, setting up the scene.

“In case you didn’t know, you can pretty much return anything to Costco—literally anything. And today, I saw someone test the limits,” she remarked. The surprising part was that the customer did not simply bring back a withered potted plant still in its nursery container. Instead, Joy said that the tree had clearly spent significant time settled in the ground before being dug up and transported back to the warehouse.

“Ladies and gentlemen, he returned a tree,” Joy explained while holding back laughter. “A tree he had already planted and taken out of the ground. This man was leaking dirt as he walked up to the return counter.”

Warehouse staff honored the refund without missing a beat

Watching the man stand in line while earth crumbled off the roots and onto the checkout lane left nearby shoppers stunned. Joy admitted that it took every ounce of composure not to burst into laughter on the spot. Yet, the desk clerks remained unfazed.

In true warehouse fashion, the transaction proceeded like any routine return of an unopened box of batteries or a half-eaten bag of chips. “It took everything in me to not laugh out loud, but ladies and gentlemen, they took it back.”

There is an undeniable boldness in looking an employee in the eyes while your return sheds garden soil at their feet. But that unshakeable confidence apparently pays dividends. And one thing’s for sure, Costco’s customer-first policy remains undefeated.
