A 65-year-old man was found dead inside a convenience store bathroom after security footage showed him entering the restroom the night before and never coming back out. According to police, the man walked into the bathroom around 7 p.m. and remained inside overnight. His body was discovered the following morning when employees arrived to open the store for business.
According to The Sun, the police in Greenbush, New York, received a call around 5 a.m. Wednesday, reporting a possible cardiac arrest at a Stewart’s Shops location on North Greenbush Road, just a few minutes outside Albany. When officers arrived, they found the man, later identified as Mark Pullen of Troy, unresponsive inside the bathroom.
Greenbush Police Chief David Keevern said there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances at the scene. “While we’re waiting for an official cause to be determined, we have no indication that it was anything other than a medical event,” Keevern stated. As a precaution, the store was temporarily closed for a day while police conducted their investigation.
Medical examiner confirms natural causes behind the death
A medical examiner later confirmed that Pullen died from natural causes. Authorities said he had several preexisting medical conditions and passed away due to complications related to those illnesses.
The Rensselaer County Medical Legal Death Investigator’s Office responded to the scene and conducted an examination of the body. After reviewing the findings, officials determined there was no evidence of foul play, bringing the investigation to a close.
Store surveillance footage showed Pullen entering the bathroom at 7 pm on Tuesday evening. The video never captured him leaving the bathroom. This case highlights how surveillance footage can reveal crucial details in unexpected situations. His body remained there overnight until employees arrived the next morning to open the shop.
A spokesperson for Stewart’s Shops confirmed that staff found the body during their morning routine checks. The Defreetsville Fire Department and North Greenbush Ambulance also responded to the scene. Police said the investigation is complete and no foul play was involved.
The store reopened after the investigation was finished. Authorities have closed the case after determining the death was due to medical complications. Similar incidents have raised questions about how institutions handle sensitive investigations involving public safety. Pullen’s family has been notified about his passing.
