Mass Effect 3 is going to be a huge title next year, but for fans of our hero, Commander Shepard, it could be a bitter sweet experience.

Talking with Dr. Ray Mazuka, CEO of BioWare, PC Gamer have confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will not be the last ever Mass Effect game. However, players will never have access to Commander Shepard again.

“We have ambitious plans to continue this franchise going forward. Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we’d provide for Commander Shepard, but it’s also a brand new beginning – it’s an entry point for new fans and it’s also a brand new beginning.”

But does this mean an end to our favourite deep-space reporter puncher? No more arguments over hair colour? No more comparisons between Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale? No more Shepard?

“Yes,” producer Michael Gamble told us. “After this, Commander Shepard’s story is complete.”

“So even if there are more games in the Mass Effect universe, he/she definitely won’t be in them?

“Correct.”

I’m as excited as anyone to find out what happens next. Mass Effect 2 was as close to a 10/10 game as I’ve played this generation and I’ll be waiting in line come release day for ME3. Of course, I can’t wait to find out where things go after the end of the trilogy, as well. With a universe as expertly crafted as in Mass Effect, the possibilities are endless.
