House Speaker Mike Johnson has admitted that losing the House in the 2026 midterm elections would effectively end President Donald Trump‘s agenda. This admission came right after Trump’s record-breaking State of the Union address, where he tried to rally support for Republicans ahead of the midterms.
According to HuffPost, Johnson said he feels “very bullish” about the GOP’s chances but was clear about what a Democratic takeover would mean. He stressed that Trump needs a full four years, “not just two,” to “fix the mess” he claims was inherited from the previous administration.
Trump’s State of the Union address ran for a record 108 minutes. His main goal was to convince Americans that the economy is stronger than they think, and he pushed voters to back Republicans in the midterms. He declared that “we’re winning so much,” saying he had sparked an economic boom at home and a new world order abroad.
Keeping the House majority is the real test of Trump’s second-term agenda
One of the night’s biggest applause lines came when Trump invited the Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. men’s hockey team into the chamber. “Our country is winning again. In fact, we’re winning so much that we really don’t know what to do about it. People are asking me, ‘Please, please, please, Mister President, we’re winning too much. We can’t take it anymore,'” Trump said before introducing the team.
The hockey players received a bipartisan standing ovation, and Trump announced he would award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. He also gave the Purple Heart to Andrew Wolfe, a National Guard member wounded in the nation’s capital.
Johnson’s panic over a potential Democratic House takeover is well documented, and you can read more about why Johnson fears Democrats regaining control. Trump also championed his immigration crackdowns and his push to keep tariffs, even after the Supreme Court struck them down.
He called the ruling “an unfortunate ruling” and vowed to use “alternative” laws to impose the taxes on imports, saying “Congressional action will not be necessary.” He argued that foreign countries pay the tariffs, despite evidence showing American consumers and businesses bear the costs.
Democrats in the chamber were vocal in their opposition. Rep. Mark Takano yelled “How about you first!” when Trump vowed to stop insider trading by members of Congress. Rep. Rashida Tlaib called out, “You’re the most corrupt president!” Trump responded, “You should be ashamed of yourselves,” and later said, “These people are crazy.” Rep. Al Green was escorted out after holding up a protest sign that read “Black People Aren’t Apes!” – a reference to a racist video Trump had previously posted.
On the economy, Trump blamed his predecessor Joe Biden and Democratic lawmakers for rising prices and healthcare costs, telling them, “You caused that problem.” Affordability concerns got relatively little attention in the speech, even though polling shows the high cost of living has been a major issue for voters. It is also worth noting that Trump’s approval ratings reached record lows heading into the State of the Union address. Economic growth also slowed in the last three months of last year.
On foreign policy, Trump addressed tensions with Iran, with two U.S. aircraft carriers recently sent to the Middle East. “My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy,” he said, but added, “I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror to have a nuclear weapon.”
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger delivered the Democratic response, criticizing Trump’s immigration policies, federal cuts, and tariffs, saying, “Even though the Supreme Court struck these tariffs down four days ago, the damage to us, the American people, has already been done. Meanwhile, the president is planning for new tariffs”; calling it “another massive tax hike on you and your family.”
