More disturbing details emerge from Ohio ‘House of Horrors’ as dad faces abuse charges over a 17th child

The investigation into the Siders family in rural Vinton County, Ohio, has exposed a horrifying environment of multi-generational abuse that extended far beyond the walls of their immediate household.

Already facing public outrage after authorities rescued 16 children from a single, waste-covered room on June 30, parents Gary Siders Jr., 36, and Elizabeth Siders, 33, are facing new criminal charges. Newly uncovered court documents reveal that the couple allegedly harbored a 17th child inside their home years before their arrest, culminating in formal indictments for serious physical and sexual abuse.

According to People, court filings reveal that the couple took in an outside minor, then between the ages of 13 and 16, for at least nine months in 2022. The child was brought into the household when Elizabeth and Gary Jr. already had their own biological children.

They were described as “pure evil”

Gary Siders Jr. allegedly abused the minor while acting in loco parentis, a legal framework that can apply when an adult assumes parental responsibilities over a child without formal adoption.

The scope of the investigation widened when a Vinton County grand jury indicted both parents on two counts of sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Prosecutors explicitly confirmed that this victim was an outside minor who was not part of the 16 immediate family members rescued over the summer.

The warrants were triggered by an independent investigation into allegations of child sex abuse and misdemeanor offenses involving Gary Jr. What investigators stepped into was described by Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson as “pure evil.” Sixteen biological children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years old, were found heavily confined within a single 12-by-12-foot room.

The children were reportedly covered in bugs, malnourished, and forced to squat amidst human waste. The floors of the residence were structurally rotted from severe and prolonged filth.

Local officials noted that area livestock were kept in better conditions than these children. Because they were reportedly isolated from society, several of the older children were entirely non-verbal and exhibited profound developmental delays.

Determining the extent of the neglect has been challenging for caseworkers due to the children’s extremely limited ability to communicate. None of the children had ever been enrolled in local schools, and authorities allege that the parents intentionally avoided obtaining birth certificates or medical records to escape detection. The immediate rescue operation required seven children to be rushed to regional hospitals, including two who were airlifted to trauma centers in critical condition.

The legal fallout has grown into a massive web of multi-generational criminal charges. Four adult family members living in the home were arrested and have pleaded not guilty to extensive child endangerment charges.

Gary Jr. and Elizabeth both face 19 counts of child endangerment, alongside the serious sexual abuse charges regarding the 17th child. The paternal grandmother, Christina Siders, faces identical endangerment counts, while the paternal grandfather, Gary Siders Sr., 73, was hit with 16 counts. In a separate branch of the initial abuse investigation, two extended associates were also indicted on charges including rape and gross sexual imposition.

The two parents want separate forensic mental evaluation

The progression of the criminal trials faces severe legal hurdles. Judge Laina Fetherolf Rogers ruled that the grandfather, Gary Siders Sr., is mentally incompetent to stand trial due to permanent, un-restorable cognitive decline.

Following this ruling, Elizabeth, Gary Jr., and Christina Siders all requested separate forensic mental evaluations. Elizabeth remains jailed on a $300,000 bond while awaiting the results of her competency evaluation.
