Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is making headlines again after she publicly slammed President Trump’s response to the tragic killing of acclaimed actor and director Rob Reiner, calling the president’s statement “classless.” This isn’t just a minor disagreement, either. Greene, who used to be one of Trump’s fiercest allies, is suggesting that even the most loyal “MAGA faithful” are upset by the president’s handling of the sensitive situation.
The controversy started when Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home this past weekend. Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Instead of focusing on the family tragedy, the president initially reacted by taking a political jab at the director, who was known for his advocacy for progressive causes and Democratic fundraising. The president stated that the prolific director had died of “Trump derangement syndrome,” a phrase he often uses to dismiss criticism from political opponents.
Greene pulled no punches when discussing the comments late Tuesday. She clearly believes the president crossed a line. She said directly that she thought the statement was “absolutely, completely below the office of the president of the United States, classless, and it was just wrong.” This is a massive public break, and frankly, it’s refreshing to see someone speak out when an official response should have focused solely on the human aspect of the tragedy, according to The Hill.
Trump has to deal with a war from within
Greene argued that the president missed a huge opportunity to discuss issues that genuinely affect millions of Americans. Nick Reiner has publicly spoken about his history of drug abuse and mental illness, even working with his father on a semi-autobiographical film centered on the topic. Greene pointed out that this was a family ripped apart by murder, but the underlying context involved mental health and addiction.
“And many families, across America, deal with family members that are drug addicts or have mental health issues,” Greene explained. She felt the president should have responded with compassion and talked about those critical issues instead of making the situation political. She stressed that he absolutely didn’t have to politicize it. “I think that was, it was really below what we expect our president to talk like,” she added.
The Georgia representative emphasized that she isn’t alone in this sentiment. She noted that many of Trump’s most loyal supporters, the so-called “MAGA faithful,” took significant issue with the president’s choice of words. She said she saw a major fallout happen immediately after his statements were released, with supporters calling him out all over social media.
Greene explained that the reaction among supporters is especially strong because of recent events, including the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Following Kirk’s horrific murder, many conservatives were upset that parts of the political left didn’t more forcefully condemn the killing. You’d think that, given the fact that the president himself was shot in the past, he would understand the need for human empathy, even when dealing with a political opponent.
“People, his supporters, including myself, we didn’t appreciate hearing the president,” Greene stated. She believes that even if you didn’t agree with Rob Reiner politically, there was simply no reason for the statement the president made. This is shaping up to be a serious fissure within the party, showing that the most loyal base expects compassion when tragedy strikes, regardless of who is involved.
