Fox News host Sean Hannity has backed a huge cash payment plan that would give every person living in Greenland $100,000. This is part of President Donald Trump’s ongoing push to buy the Danish territory. The proposal isn’t just a small idea being thrown around. It has support from major political figures and involves real money.
According to Mediaite, the plan, which administration officials reportedly suggested this month, would give between $10,000 and $100,000 to each of Greenland’s 56,000 residents. Hannity supports the highest amount, which would total $5.6 billion. For context, $100,000 is a life-changing sum for any person, especially when offered to everyone in an entire territory.
Hannity made his argument on a recent show while speaking with Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO). He called the deal “a no-brainer” and said President Trump is “forever in a state of negotiation” and that “everything’s negotiable.” The Fox host pointed out that the average person in Greenland makes only about $60,000 per year, so this payout would be huge for them. He said Denmark hasn’t treated Greenland well. “Denmark’s not exactly been generous to them,” Hannity stated.
Greenland deserves better treatment than what Denmark has provided
Hannity brought up Denmark’s dark history with Greenland. He referred to what “Danish doctors did to the women in Greenland,” pointing to the forced placement of birth control devices in Greenlandic women during the 1960s and 1970s. This historical abuse raises serious questions about Denmark’s moral right to keep control of the territory. Despite the financial offer, Greenland has made clear it’s not for sale.
Hannity believes the U.S. can offer Greenland something Denmark cannot: real economic growth. He argues America has the power to help Greenland “take their natural resources to the next level and enrich every person in Greenland.”
This massive financial offer comes from President Trump’s long-term interest in buying Greenland. The president has repeatedly said the U.S. needs the island for “national security” reasons. He also views getting Greenland as important for his political goals, saying it’s “what I feel is psychologically needed for success.”
Senator Schmitt confirmed the president takes this seriously. “This is very top of mind for him,” Schmitt said. “This is something that he’s very serious about, and I am glad he is.” The senator argues Europeans need to drop their “pride” and “understand the United States of America is the only country on the planet that can protect Greenland and the NATO alliance by acquiring Greenland.” However, some worry about potential military moves that could damage NATO. If the administration is truly considering a $5.6 billion payment, they clearly aren’t backing down from this deal anytime soon.
