Lawmakers are calling for immediate investigations and stricter controls after authorities uncovered a suspected unauthorized biological laboratory operating right inside a Las Vegas home. The circumstances around the situation, its connections to a bigger lab in California, and the contents of the lab are fueling major concerns about national security and potential foreign ties.
The property was discovered because of its link to Jia Bei Zhu, a Chinese citizen, who is in federal custody because of a biolab found last year in Reedley, California. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff, Kevin McMahill, confirmed that investigators located more than 1,000 pieces of evidence containing “potential biological and hazardous materials.”
It looks like the property manager is facing charges, too. Police arrested Ori Solomon, an Israeli citizen, on charges related to disposing of and discharging hazardous waste. According to a Fox News report, the unknown biological compounds and chemicals were mainly locked away in the garage of the residence. Now lawmakers are raising serious questions about how Zhu was able to access and transport them in the first place.
The scale of the finding reads more like a comic villain’s lair than real life
The danger involved here is terrifying, especially when you reflect on what authorities found at Zhu’s 2023 facility in Reedley. That lab reportedly contained suspected agents like tuberculosis, HIV, the dengue virus, and even the deadliest known form of malaria. Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ark., didn’t mince words about the risk these materials pose, pointing out that “It wouldn’t take much of these deadly pathogens to kill thousands of Americans.”
Following the discovery, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., stated that the most crucial step now is determining if Zhu has any connection to the Chinese government. Hawley noted that the “Chinese government is not our friend. He explained that they have seen a clear pattern where the Chinese government has tried to use Chinese nationals to “place nationals into sensitive research projects, into sensitive positions at our universities, into sensitive laboratories.”
Senator Cotton is focused on beefing up biosecurity to close the loophole that allows for these illegal labs. He complained that there are “very limited controls on the provision of these deadly pathogens to end users.” Cotton is demanding that providers of these materials implement stricter checks “to make sure that [they are] actually being used for proper purposes, not being used for whatever this Chinese national is doing in Reedley and Las Vegas.”
Both senators agreed that while they don’t know yet if the Chinese Communist Party is directly involved or if there are other hidden labs out there, they need to find answers fast. As Senator Hawley put it, “I think we better find out really quick.”
Lawmakers are going to have to also consider how to prevent labs of any kind, like drug labs, from popping up.
