The Millennium Falcon, otherwise known as the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, is poised for a slight makeover in the upcoming anthology pic, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
That’s because, much like Rogue One before it, Ron Howard’s long-awaited spinoff largely takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, which first introduced moviegoers to the inimitable Han Solo just as Luke and Obi-Wan paid a visit to Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine.
In doing so, Lucasfilm has given Ron Howard the necessary creative license to experiment with all things Star Wars, and at least according to Donald Glover – he’ll play the young Lando Calrissian in a few months’ time – Howard employed a totally new approach while filming the Falcon scenes.
I remember going on set one of the first times, he was like, ‘Yeah, I want to follow you onto the Millennium Falcon and do this thing.’ I was like, ‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen the outside go into the inside.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, no one’s ever done that shot.’ As a fan I was like yeah, I was really excited. I know there’s been a lot of talk in the press about this movie but for me anyway, it was a dream and also it looks really cool to me.
If online reports are to believed, Disney and Lucasfilm are bracing for a sizeable loss on Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is yet to launch its marketing campaign in earnest – presumably in fear that it would draw attention away from The Last Jedi. A teaser trailer is in the pipeline, though, while Donald Glover recently clarified those storied reshoots.
Not a ton actually. Not a lot at all, at least not for me. I think we’ve all never been faced with anything like that and I think he did a good job of coming and tell us he didn’t want to change what we were doing at all. He wanted us to remain confident in our vision. He just wanted to sculpt it in a way.
The swift removal of erstwhile directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller prompted that creative overhaul, but Lucasfilm appointed a seasoned veteran in Ron Howard, and we’ll be able to see his first crack at a Star Wars movie when Solo launches into theaters on May 25th.
