While many gamers know Square Enix for the likes of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and handling Japanese distribution of western games that just shouldn’t be released over there, we’ve learned that there may be new ground coming from Square Enix in the next few years.

Ryutaro Ichimura, the director for Dragon Quests VIII and IX, says he’s working on a new action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 3. Ichimura mentions that he’s brought his team all over the world and adapted a western European feel for the game, giving off a Middle Ages vibe. He’s also mentioned that the basic concept of the game is nailed down, and is now looking for skilled developers used for creating action RPGs to add to his admittedly small team of about 35 people.

I think this is great. Square experimented with Unreal Engine 3 with the release of The Last Remnant a few years ago, but that wasn’t very well received. NIER, however (pictured above), was a fantastic action RPG published by Square and developed by the now disbanded Cavia. NIER did a lot of things that many games from Square hadn’t done before, and I think it was vastly underrated. That being said, I’ll be watching this new project like a hawk.

What say you, gamers? What kind of game are you hoping for?
