In addition to breaking all of our wallets, the ongoing Steam summer sale also managed to take Ubisoft’s Uplay servers offline this past weekend when too many gamers attempted to play their newly purchased Ubisoft software.
For those unfamiliar with Ubisoft’s fantastic DRM scheme for PC games, the system works by requiring users to maintain a connection with the Uplay server in order to play their legitimately purchased video games. If that Internet connection is lost for any reason (like if Ubisoft fails to keep their servers online) the game will cease functioning, even in offline single-player modes, until the connection is reestablished. Good times!
Ubisoft has since fixed the problem with their servers and brought them back online, allowing their customers to finally play the games they purchased. They also issued the following heartfelt, and profoundly humble, apology on the company’s forums:
