The Little Mermaid live action remake has been the subject of a lot of scrutiny for a few reasons, but one in particular has people riled up, calling it the absolute worst part of the movie. That thing? Awkwafina rapping on the nightmare song that is “The Scuttlebutt.”
An audio clip of the Crazy Rich Asians actress rapping on the song is currently making its way through TikTok, and let’s just say the comments aren’t nice ones.
“The scuttle song is absolutely atrocious,” one person said. The song was written by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, and sounds like Awkwafina doing a middle school production of the famous show. It’s like a Hamilton song, but with Awkwafina rapping instead of, you know, someone good.
Sample lyrics: “Who-said-what-who-does-that, yeah, the Scuttlebutt!” One person posted a video of themselves crying with the caption, “my ears died.”
Someone else said the actress “annoys me so much.” After listening to this atrocious clip, it’s hard not to agree.
This person calls it “a hate crime for my ears.”
This isn’t your regular run of the mill hate over something like casting a woman or making Ariel Black. This is the strange outlier of hate that everyone can unite behind no matter creed, religion or heritage.
Here’s a pretty good take as well: “The Scuttlebutt Scuttlesucks. It’s good at being what it is, but what it is is ‘Awkwafina and Daveed Diggs doing Hamilton rap in the middle of The Little Mermaid.’ It feels like the brainchild of some executive who can’t stop won’t stop doing “Guns and Ships” at office parties.”
That’s not really the response you want from the soundtrack of a big budget Disney remake film. I get that on paper it seems like a good idea, and that Miranda has hit home runs for Disney before, with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” being one of the best examples.
In my opinion and that of many others, this song is trash though. Awkwafina’s voice sounds like nails on a symphony of chalkboards. They use this song to torture dissidents in countries where Dictators rule. I’d rather get my teeth drilled without anesthesia than listen to the abomination that is this woman’s voice.
Look, Awkwafina is very funny and obviously incredibly talented. But you wouldn’t ask LeBron James to do your taxes. That’s not his strength! Why were we subjected to this nightmare of a monstrosity. God save us all. Listen for yourself, but you’re going to wish you didn’t.
The Little Mermaid hits theaters on May 26.
