The investigation into the abduction of Nancy Guthrie has taken a new turn, with reports suggesting the masked man suspected of kidnapping her may have visited her home before the day she went missing. This development raises new questions about how much planning went into the incident.
According to ABC News, the key detail comes from one of the doorbell camera images of the masked man suspected of kidnapping the 84-year-old. Sources familiar with the investigation say this particular image appears to have been taken on a different date, before Guthrie disappeared. This stands in contrast to what FBI Director Kash Patel said nearly two weeks ago, when he stated that all images, including two videos, were from “the morning of her disappearance” on February 1.
Most of the images show the man at Guthrie’s front door near Tucson, Arizona, wearing a backpack and a holstered gun. However, one image shows the suspect without a backpack or gun. Sources say this specific image was captured by Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera on a day before her suspected abduction. One theory is that the suspect approached the door, noticed the camera, and left, only to return later. Some of the other photos and videos also show the man tampering with the doorbell camera.
The timeline of events adds more weight to an already complex case
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos addressed this new information, stating that it did not come from him, though he did not deny that the images could have been taken on different days. His department later posted a statement on social media saying that since there is no timestamp on the images, “any suggestion that the photographs were taken on different days is purely speculative.”
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, has not been seen since January 31. She was dropped off at her home in the Catalina Foothills by her son-in-law that day, and her family reported her missing around noon the following day. The FBI has described the suspect as roughly 5 feet 9 inches tall and of medium build. Investigators have also been turning to Walmart for clues that could help crack the case.
A timeline put together by the sheriff’s department outlines several key moments. The doorbell camera was disconnected at 1:47 AM. Another camera registered a person at 2:12 AM but did not capture any footage. At 2:28 AM, Guthrie’s pacemaker disconnected from her phone.
Adding further complexity to the case, purported abductors have reportedly sent ransom notes to media outlets, issuing two payment deadlines, both of which have now passed. In a more recent development, the FBI’s belief that Guthrie was taken across the border has surfaced alongside a new ransom demand carrying a disturbing warning. Officials are still working to identify a suspect.
