TikToker starts drinking pond water in Yosemite every day, his followers are spiraling after he goes silent six days in

Natural selection is livestreaming now.

TikToker Liam Porter, who goes by @liamporter65, has worried his followers after going completely silent following day six of his “Project Pond Water” challenge. Porter had been filming himself drinking untreated pond water every day, saying he would keep going until he got giardiasis. The sudden silence has left thousands of viewers genuinely concerned about his wellbeing.

According to Brobible, Porter launched the challenge with a video that quickly got 1.6 million views on TikTok. In each video, in a style reminiscent of a low-budget Bear Grylls, he would announce, “Day one, drinking pond water until I get giardia,” before scooping up murky water and drinking it on camera. He never gave a clear reason for the challenge, but the viral attention it generated may have been reason enough.

Drinking untreated water can expose a person to serious illnesses like cholera, dysentery, typhoid, or polio, or deadly amoebas and microorganisms. One commenter joked, “hey my dog does this too.” Another wrote, “I’m a freshwater ecologist and just sighed.”

Porter’s disappearance from TikTok is what has really alarmed people

Porter’s followers noticed his feed went quiet after his day six post, nearly a week ago. Comments started pouring in with concern. “where is day 7” one user wrote. Another said, “We have not heard from you. Where are you?” If Porter is in Yosemite, much of the park’s water is actually managed and treated, which offers some reassurance.

However, Yosemite’s official guidance still advises caution. Hikers collecting water from wild sources should always use filtration or chemical purification, source water from flowing streams when possible, and avoid collecting water downstream from campsites or animal grazing areas. Park officials also recommend carrying at least one liter of water per hour of hiking in warm weather.

Giardia duodenalis, or Giardia for short, is a tiny parasite that causes giardiasis, the very illness Porter was trying to contract. It lives in the guts of infected people and animals and exits the body through feces. Giardia can survive for weeks to months outside the body, even in soil, and is found everywhere from local parks to remote wilderness. In the United States, it causes more gut illness than any other parasite, with over a million cases reported every year.

Symptoms usually begin one to two weeks after infection and can last two to six weeks, though some people experience symptoms for years, according to the CDC. These include diarrhea two to five times a day, fatigue, gas, greasy or foul-smelling stool, stomach cramps, nausea, and dehydration.

Children are more susceptible than adults, and people with weakened immune systems are also at higher risk. Swallowing just a few Giardia germs is enough to make a person sick. Porter’s story is a reminder of how viral TikTok challenges gone wrong can spiral quickly into real concern.

To avoid Giardia, always wash your hands with soap and water regularly and avoid swallowing water while swimming. When out in nature, always boil or filter water from lakes, springs, or rivers before drinking. Boil water for at least one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet in elevation. If you think you may be infected, contact a healthcare provider, as it can be diagnosed through stool samples and treated with medication.

As of now, there has been no further word from Liam Porter. Attempts to reach him through TikTok direct messages and comments on his posts have not received a response. Everyone is hoping he is okay, and not, as some followers jokingly feared, “gotten by the pond.” TikTok has seen no shortage of viral chaos lately, like the TikToker who scammed MAGA fans out of $30,000 by pretending to support Donald Trump.
