For digital creator Alex Lockhart (@alex.lck), an attempt to uphold store policy during a routine checkout resulted in an agonizingly awkward moment. It allegedly left him wishing the floor would open up and swallow him whole. In a recent TikTok storytime, Lockhart detailed this as a “retail horror story.”
The creator allegedly assumed a shopper was sneakily concealing unpaid merchandise. But in minutes, it turned into an unforgettable encounter that left him avoiding eye contact with the customer for the rest of their interaction.
A TK Maxx clerk suspected a customer was stealing mid-transaction
The awkward saga unfolded while Lockhart was working the till. He explained that he was scanning a customer’s items as she prepped a large tote bag on the counter. Mid-scan, the worker’s alarm bells went off when he noticed the woman allegedly grab an item from her side counter and slip it directly into her bag.
Assuming the shopper was trying to bypass the register with unpaid merchandise, Lockhart felt compelled to step in. “In my mind, I’m thinking, ‘Why are you stealing? What are you not paying for? Hm?'” Lockhart recalled, deciding to confront her directly at the register.
The worker reached into the bag and looked in horror at what he was holding
Apologizing for the interruption, Lockhart allegedly reached straight into the woman’s tote bag to pull out the hidden item and scan it. To his shock, the customer didn’t fight back. She allowed him to inspect without saying a word against it.
As he held the item in his hand, Lockhart realized with instant dread that he hadn’t intercepted a stolen piece of clothing or home decor. He was holding a bottle of personal sexual lubricant.
“And I pick the item up which she just threw in the bag… and in my hand I’m holding… lube. Holding lube. Boots’ own lubrication. Sexual lubrication. I’m holding lube.”
Mortified by his assumption, Lockhart allegedly dropped the bottle back into the woman’s bag. The two then shared an intense, unspoken look of mutual embarrassment before completing the remainder of the transaction in total, deadpan silence.

Retail workers are trained to stay alert for loss prevention. But intervening without absolute certainty often leads to intense social friction. Employees should be extra careful before assuming suspicious movement equals theft. Because you would mot want to confront a shopper over a personal item they brought into the store, like Lockhart.

“I’m not staring at her. I am avoiding eye contact at all costs. Because I would rather be anywhere else on the earth right… I’d rather be anywhere else.”
