An American diplomat has been secretly flown out of the United Kingdom following a raid on his London flat. The operation, which involved US authorities seizing the individual and transporting him to a US airbase for removal, occurred last month amid allegations that the man possessed indecent images of children, Sky News reports.
US personnel do not hold any powers of arrest within the UK. Furthermore, there was no formal request to extradite the man before he was moved out of the country. The entire event is reportedly tied to an investigation currently being conducted into another person located in the United States.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson addressed the sequence of events, stating: “On Tuesday August 25, US authorities made us aware of an investigation they are conducting into suspected offences in London relating to indecent images of children. We continue to liaise with them regarding this matter.”
The US embassy has confirmed that they are aware of the allegations involving an individual assigned to their mission
A spokesperson for the embassy noted: “We are aware of allegations concerning an individual assigned to the Embassy. The United States government expects all personnel to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, and we take these allegations seriously.”
The spokesperson added: “While we can’t comment on the specifics of the case, we quickly informed UK law enforcement and took swift action, and we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners regarding these allegations. The individual in question has been reassigned to the United States in conjunction with an ongoing investigation. The embassy has informed British authorities of the case.”
This incident brings back memories of the 2019 case involving Anne Sacoolas, a US official who left the UK after a car crash in Northamptonshire resulted in the death of 19-year-old Harry Dunn. While she was eventually convicted of causing his death, she never returned to the UK to face her sentencing hearing in person.
Radd Seiger, a victim’s advocate who worked closely with the Dunn family, shared his perspective on how these situations should be handled. He told Sky News that when crimes are committed on UK soil, “that’s where they have to be investigated.”
Seiger acknowledged the historical significance of diplomatic immunity, noting: “Diplomatic immunity is a very important process that goes back over centuries and was designed to keep diplomats safe in hotspot countries, for instance, if they were taken hostage.” However, he emphasized that this status is “not a get out of jail free card” and argued that diplomats should remain subject to local investigative processes.
The UK government is currently in contact with the US embassy regarding the matter. A UK government spokesperson said: “We expect all foreign diplomats in the UK to abide by our laws, in the same way we expect all UK diplomats to do so when posted overseas. As a US investigation is ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”
