‘We have to go!’: Donald Trump smiled for cameras all day in China ….while American staff were being trampled, blocked, and locked in rooms

Apparently, that's all the respect the president commands.

While President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping were posing for cameras at their summit in Beijing, things were getting increasingly hostile for the American team. From what has been reported, the trip turned into a logistical nightmare, with American staff members being trampled, blocked, and locked in rooms by Chinese officials. The contrast between the polished photos of world leaders and the chaotic reality just out of frame was hard to ignore.

The visit officially began on May 13, 2026, and by May 14, frustrations had clearly reached a breaking point. One member of the United States delegation was overheard calling the entire experience a “s — tshow.” It is hard to argue with that description, given how far Chinese officials went to control the movements of the American visitors throughout the trip.

One of the most alarming moments happened during the morning bilateral meeting between the two presidents. An aggressive group of Chinese reporters rushed into the room, and in the chaos, a White House advance team member was knocked down and trampled. She was reportedly left bruised and shaken, and her colleagues loudly protested the behavior of the Chinese media on the scene, according to the New York Post.

The American team faced a series of deliberate and troubling obstacles at every turn

The security friction continued later in the afternoon at the Temple of Heaven, where Chinese officials blocked a Secret Service agent from entering a secure area because he was carrying a firearm. Carrying a firearm is standard procedure for the Secret Service, but Beijing officials pushed for him to give up his weapon, creating a tense standoff that lasted 30 minutes.

The situation was only resolved when a different, pre-cleared agent was brought in as a replacement. The American press pool was also subjected to strict controls throughout the day. Reporters had their water bottles confiscated, were given limited access to bathrooms, and were kept outside in temperatures topping 80 degrees with no alternative hydration provided.

At one point, after Trump and Xi posed for photos, journalists were rounded up and locked in a holding room, and the Chinese side refused to let them rejoin the presidential motorcade when it was time to leave. Reports suggest Trump has been growing increasingly frustrated with his key Middle East allies throughout this period as well.

This led to a series of loud arguments, with American team members repeatedly shouting “we have to go” as they tried to reach their transport. A White House official told the Chinese side directly that the Trump administration would never treat them this way if the situation were reversed.

When the decision was finally made to move, a staffer announced “We are going,” and the American contingent physically pushed past Chinese officials who were running with their arms outstretched to block them.

On the digital security front, the President, his staff, and the press were all instructed to use burner phones and email addresses for the duration of the two-day summit to prevent data theft. The trip was clearly not the smooth diplomatic visit the administration had hoped for. With the ceasefire with Iran described by the President as being on “massive life support,” the geopolitical stakes were already extremely high going into the summit, reports CNN.

Trump has also been publicly threatening to abandon the Iran deal on Truth Social, adding further uncertainty to an already fragile situation. While the two leaders were expected to discuss trade, the visit ended up being defined more by these behind-the-scenes confrontations than by any major policy developments.
