After weeks of heated debate over the authenticity of President Trump’s signature on a birthday card to Jeffrey Epstein, the FBI Director has just agreed to investigate the matter. The news came during a tense House Judiciary Committee hearing today, where Florida Representative Jared Moskowitz directly confronted FBI Director Kash Patel about the document’s origins.
Patel, who has been under fire for his handling of the Epstein files since becoming Director, was asked by Moskowitz if he would investigate the supposedly false signature, which would make the document a forgery and therefore illegal. “On what basis?” Patel responded. Moskowitz was quick to reiterate that the forged signature belonged to the President of the United States, which made it a significant issue. Without much hesitation, Patel said, “Sure, I’ll do it,” and Moskowitz said he looked forward to seeing that investigation.
Obviously, Trump wouldn’t want to be investigated by his own Director, so Patel is in a bad position. This exchange is the latest development in a saga that has intensified since the House Oversight Committee released the “birthday book” last week. The book, compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell for Epstein’s 50th birthday, included a note and a drawing that the White House has repeatedly denied were written or signed by Trump.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt has been firm in her denial, stating that “The President did not write this letter. He did not sign this letter.” The White House has even gone so far as to say that it would support a forensic analysis of the signature to prove the President right, which is a surprisingly confident move, to be fair. However, James Comer, the House Oversight Committee chairman, said that he wouldn’t be doing a forensic investigation himself, saying, “The president says he did not sign it, so I take the president at his word.”
The whole thing has become a bit of a political thorn in the President’s side. While he has urged his supporters to move on from the topic, the public’s appetite for details about the Epstein case remains high. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll even showed that a majority of Americans believe the government is hiding information about both Epstein’s death and his client list.
This is something that has only ramped up since the alleged card was made public, making it a hot topic for anyone following the news. This latest promise from the FBI director comes after a tumultuous week of congressional hearings. Just yesterday, during a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Patel had a shouting match with a few Democratic senators, at one point calling Senator Adam Schiff a “political buffoon” and an “utter coward.”
In response, Schiff said, “You can make an internet troll the FBI director, but he will always be nothing more than an internet troll.” This is on top of accusations from Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, who has accused Patel of using the powers of the FBI to serve President Trump’s agenda, leaving America “less safe.” Patel has vehemently denied these claims, but it really looks like Patel isn’t long for his position.
