Taylor Sheridan’s hit neo-Western series Yellowstone earned itself two prequels for its complex which explored the complex family drama of the Dutton family of years past. The latest of the three series following the Dutton family has become the next big production halted due to the ongoing Writers Strike.
The first season of 1923 premiered on Dec.18, 2022, and ran till Feb. 26, 2023. The debut episode of 1923 brought 7.4 million viewers in both linear and streaming telecasts, making it the biggest debut for Paramount Plus. The production of the second season of 1923 was scheduled to start on Monday, June 5, but it has been indefinitely delayed in light of the WGA strike.
The pre-production of 1923 began in July 2022 in Brutte, Montana. According to NBC Montana, Civic Center manager Bill Melvin was informed about the production delay by the 1923 team and they requested a 10-day extension of the contract. The production of 1923 is apparently in a contract with Butte-Silver Bow and will pay $75,000 each month to use the Civic Centre, but if the strike continues, they may continue asking for additional extensions.
The WGA strike began on May 2 and is not nearing an end anytime soon. Late-night television programs like Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, The Late Show on CBS, and Tonight and Late Night on NBC, all went on a hiatus early on. As writers participated in a walkout, popular sitcoms like American Dad and Family Guy were also impacted by the strike. Stranger Things’ final season also faced delays amidst the strike among many other big productions.
The original Yellowstone series ran for 5 seasons on Paramount Plus and Sheridan soon got the green light to a prequel series titled 1883, which was again followed by 1923. The latest in the series of dramas chronicling the Dutton Family, 1923 serves as a sequel to 1883 and a prequel to Yellowstone. Paramount Plus officially confirmed that Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren’s epic saga will be concluded with a second eight-episode season earlier this year in February.
The series also stars Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, Jerome Flynn, Isabel May, Brian Geraghty, Michelle Randolph, and Timothy Dalton in the main roles. It follows a generation of the Dutton family in 1923 during which they experienced various difficulties including Prohibition, a severe drought, and the early beginnings of the Great Depression, which devastated Montana long before the 1929 stock market crash. Fans will have to wait quite a long before they see this generation of the Dutton family on the screen again as the WGA strike still awaits a resolution.
