There has been a heartbreaking update on the five-year-old child whom ICE agents cruelly used as bait to try and capture his relatives. After being detained in Minnesota, Liam Conejo Ramos was moved to a detention center in Texas and is reportedly not feeling well.
Zena Stenvik, the superintendent for Ramos’ school spoke to the Huffington Post and stated that she had had a conversation with the pre-schooler’s mother on Tuesday and the news was not good.
Liam Conejo Ramos is in poor health
“Unfortunately, Liam’s health is not doing great right now,” she explained, “He’s been ill. I’ve been told he has a fever. So I’m very, very concerned about his well-being in that facility.” Stenvik is, of course, right to be concerned as ICE detention facilities are notorious for ignoring the medical needs of inmates and there have been so many reports of inhumane treatment towards those being detained.
It’s horrific to think that a five-year-old child is trapped in such a situation, while being kept separate from his parents. Stenvik added that his mother is “incredibly distraught,” as any mother would be if their baby was being held captive by thugs like ICE. Speaking on her son’s deteriorating health the mother claimed, “Liam is getting sick because the food they receive is not of good quality.”
Attorney Eric Lee also claimed that the conditions in the facility where Ramos was being held were “absolutely abysmal.” Lee represents other families being held in the Texas center and he stated that, “They mix baby formula with water that is putrid. The food has bugs in it. The guards are often verbally abusive.” This is the place the Trump administration and ICE have sent a five-year-old child to, let’s not forget that.
According to PEOPLE, Ramos’ hasn’t been sleeping a lot. Democratic Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro visited him and his dad and explained, “he hasn’t been himself, he’s been sleeping a lot because he’s been depressed and sad.”
The pre-schooler should not be in a detention facility
What makes this so much more frustrating and sad is the fact that Ramos and his father should not have been detained by ICE in the first place. There were no deportation orders for the family and they were an active asylum case, but evidently ICE doesn’t care about any of that.
Castro has called for Liam’s release after his visit but as of writing the five-year-old child remains behind bars despite committing no crime. Even with his health deteriorating still the DHS and ICE drag their feet.
