‘A disaster of epic proportions’: Democrat emerges from classified Iran war briefing horrified at Trump’s ‘totally incoherent’ plans

"We are not gonna be able to achieve any of our stated objectives."

It’s easy to bomb a place to dust. The military is set up to do precisely that, and with a wave of a presidential hand, countless tonnes of high explosives can be launched at whoever he wants. But destruction is the easy part: figuring out what to do next is a teeny bit more complicated.

Donald Trump is currently in the simple and easy “destruction” phase when it comes to Iran. Next up comes the far more complex questions of what to do with a shattered, traumatized Iran with no functioning government, infrastructure, or economy.

And so, senators were eager to hear what the Trump administration had up its sleeve in a classified two-hour briefing on the next stages of the war with Iran. The exact details of what was revealed are, of course, not public record. But the reaction from those who attended? Bewildered horror and shock at the sheer level of stupidity on display.

As Senator Chris Murphy explained:

“I just came from a two-hour, closed-door classified briefing on the war. It just confirmed to me it’s totally incoherent. We are not gonna be able to achieve any of our stated objectives. But I mention it because it’s another closed door briefing. We have still not heard a full explanation as to why this is necessary.”

“A disaster of epic proportions”

Murphy goes on to accuse Trump of wilfully ignoring the Constitution, which says that Congress must approve any war. He goes on to describe what Trump and Pete Hegseth are planning as:

“A disaster of epic proportions. It’s already getting Americans killed. It’s driving up prices here at home. Harder line leadership antithetical to US interests are already strenghtening inside Iran and there’s really no way that we’re going to be able to destroy their nuclear program because most of it’s buried underground unless we mount a ground invasion which would be even more disastous and more unpopular.

Murphy sums up the situation as a “ten-day debacle”. In the coming weeks and months, everyone will grimly conclude with that assessment. Like Iraq and Afghanistan before it, all US action will achieve is transforming the nation into a hotbed of radicalized terrorism that’ll inevitably spill over into attacks on American cities and civilians.

And if there really does have to be boots on the ground in Iran? Get ready for a steady procession of flag-draped coffins. But hey, maybe Trump will remember to take off his baseball cap next time. Silver linings, y’know.
