A former Republican House Speaker just proposed fixing the Strait of Hormuz — with a dozen nukes

Newt Gingrich has lost his mind.

Newt Gingrich, a former Republican House Speaker has suggested an insane plan to circumvent the reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. The plan you ask? Create a new channel with thermonuclear explosions of course!

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically significant stretch of water as it provides the only access point to the Persian Gulf. Right now the important choke point is being blockaded by Iranian ships and it’s giving Donald Trump a real headache, especially as he’s trying to convince the rest of the world that the U.S. is winning this unnecessary conflict.

But fear not as Gingrich has a back up plan. The former House Speaker shared his crazy scheme on X, suggesting, “we cut a new channel through friendly territory,” and apparently all it would take is “a dozen thermonuclear detonations.”

Well when you put it like that it sounds so simple! You have to wonder why we haven’t done this before! Obvious sarcasm aside there are more than a few problems with the idea and they’re pretty obvious if you think about it for more than five seconds which Gingrich clearly didn’t.

Where did Newt Gingrich get this idea?

We have to give credit where credit’s due, this wasn’t actually the Republican politician’s idea originally. In fact, the plan was originally suggested by a satirical article from Chinatalk. The original article makes it clear that the plan is a joke as the author writes, “The views expressed above do not necessarily represent those of anyone with brain cells.”

As for Gingrich, it’s not entirely clear whether or not he was joking too, although he doesn’t exactly seem like the type of guy to have a sense of humor. The original Chinatalk article has since been updated to reflect Gingrich’s post with an additional screenshot and caption that reads, “Update: Newt approved.”

People responded to the former House Speaker’s plan with mockery and blatant holes in his idea. One person reiterated how crazy Gingrich was for even suggesting it, “And people wonder why the rest of the world thinks America has lost its mind,” they quipped.

One of the things that would definitely need to be considered would be radioactive contamination which could have a serious effect on the environment of whichever ally country would be the home of this proposed new channel. On that note, which U.S. ally in the area would be mad enough to let the U.S. detonate multiple nuclear bombs on their soil? Nobody.

Let’s face it, this is a delusional plan from a delusional man. But the scariest part is knowing that Donald Trump is equally as delusional and it’s very easy to picture him actually considering this.
