The 98th Academy Awards were light on drama. There was no on-stage craziness, no misread winners, and the only real disaster was some seriously questionable audio mixing. But what it lacked in high-tension embarrassment, it more than made up for in comedy.
Conan O’Brien was the host and, frankly, knocked it out of the park. In general, Oscars ‘humor’ tends to lean towards the tame end of the spectrum. But, apparently, someone decided that O’Brien should be let off the leash last night.
And so he left jaws on the floor with an aside about the Epstein files:
"For the first time since 2012 that there are no british actors nominated for Best Actor or Best Actress. A british spokesperson commented, "Yeah, well, at least we arrest our pedophiles." pic.twitter.com/TViQv0DAjv

“For the first time since 2012 there are no British actors nominated for Best Actor or Best Actress. Yeah. A British spokesperson said, “Yeah, well, at least we arrest our pedophiles.”
The reaction from the star-studded crowd wasn’t so much laughter as a stunned gasp, followed by a smattering of applause. O’Brien is, of course, referring to the fallout (or lack of it) surrounding the recent release of the Epstein files.
Where ARE those arrests?
These have named many powerful people as being up to their neck in Jeffrey Epstein’s web of sin, with emails showing influential and wealthy people apparently not only fully aware of what the modern era’s most notorious pedophile got up to behind closed doors, but eager to get involved.
So far, none of those named have been arrested. And it seems nobody will be, with the Trump administration arguing that the files give no credible reason for criminal prosecution. Uh-huh.
Mercifully, things are at least a little better across the Atlantic, where Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (formerly known as Prince) was detained by cops on his birthday. Senior government figure (and former US Ambassador) Peter Mandelson was also arrested after suspicions grew that he was about to flee the UK.
Now, it’s worth underlining that neither of these arrests guarantees that these two will ever face a jury or be convicted. However, it’s certainly better than the ‘literally nothing’ done by Trump’s Department of Justice.
All of which is to say that O’Brien’s joke almost certainly ruffled the feathers of some very paranoid, very rich men who are currently doing their best to ensure that they never, ever face consequences for their disgusting crimes.
