Barack Obama finally recognizes Zohran Mamdani, and the ground just moved

It’s official, the political landscape in New York City just got a lot more interesting. Former President Barack Obama visited a group of preschoolers in the Bronx this Saturday, marking a major public appearance alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. This meeting is a significant progression in their relationship, coming just over a week after Mamdani celebrated his 100th day in office. 

The two spent their time at the Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx, which is part of the city’s free preschool program for 3- and 4-year-olds. It is a part of community-focused work that Mamdani is trying to prioritize. Clips from the visit show Obama and Mamdani sharing a laugh and leading a sing-along of Wheels on the Bus, while reading to the children. 

Things even took a funny turn when the children finished singing a different song. When Mamdani asked what the song was, the children excitedly shouted, Soda Pop. Obama didn’t miss a beat, patting the mayor on the back and joking about Mamdani not recognizing the K-Pop Demon Hunters track: “I just want you to know that it’s great that you just made the mayor feel really old, which is fantastic.”

While the public event was fun, there was also some serious business behind the scenes. Aides for the mayor had been working for months to coordinate this meeting. The goal was to build on the momentum Mamdani had gathered during his first few months in office. While details of their private meeting have been sparse, Mamdani stated on X that they “discussed our administration’s vision for this City.”

Per The New York Times, Obama had already been signaling his support for Mamdani long before this Bronx visit. Back in November 2025, Obama told the then-candidate over a phone call that his campaign, which focused heavily on affordability, had been “impressive to watch.” At this point, other party leaders were hesitant to get behind the candidate. Instead, Obama reached out with an offer to be a “sounding board.” 

This included guidance on the challenges of staffing a new administration and delivering on an ambitious agenda. This first public visit shows just how far that relationship has come since the days when the Democratic establishment kept a distance from the 34-year-old democratic socialist. Additionally, the quiet support is impressive because Obama usually avoids any interventions in municipal races since he left office.

Mamdani’s political life, however, isn’t just about his budding relationship with the former president. He is simultaneously trying to navigate a working relationship with President Trump. Their first meeting was a stunning success when Mamdani completely charmed Trump. Later, he was able to maintain a positive tone through some clever flattery. 

In the past week, things have soured. Trump took to Truth Social this Thursday to blast the mayor over a new tax proposal. The plan, announced by Mamdani and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, targets secondary homes worth more than $5 million. The goal is to raise $500 million to help address the city’s $5.4 billion budget deficit.

Trump did not hold back in his criticism of the move. “Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York!” the president wrote. He continued by saying, “It will only get WORSE. The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG. People are fleeing. ”

Mamdani has defended the tax, arguing that if someone can afford a $5 million second home that sits empty for most of the year, they can certainly contribute to the city’s fiscal health. During a press conference on Thursday, the mayor told reporters, “We’re talking about the levels of wealth that are storing themselves here in New York City all at the time at which our city is facing a generational fiscal crisis.” 

It’s a bold policy move, and it’s clearly putting him at odds with the current administration in Washington, even as he finds common ground with Obama. It’ll be interesting to see how he manages these two very different political relationships moving forward.
