Bill Maher went from Trump praise to a full-on roast of his ‘baffling’ incompetence, and people are wondering if gas prices triggered it

Comedian Bill Maher is now openly criticizing President Trump for what he calls “baffling” incompetence regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a sharp turnaround from his praise for the president’s earlier actions against Iran. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical has sent gas and oil prices soaring, directly affecting consumers across the nation. 

Per The Hill, Maher questioned why the U.S. appears to lack control over the Strait of Hormuz, despite its “complete military superiority.” He voiced his confusion to his “Real Time” panelists, former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci and former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, asking why the U.S. couldn’t control “the one place we need to control in Iran.” 

Scaramucci chimed in, attributing the issue to “bad war-planning,” suggesting that the U.S. had deployed its mine-sweeping capabilities to other global regions instead of keeping them ready for the Strait. This, he explained, has been a major hurdle for the Navy trying to navigate the area.

Following the initial U.S. strikes on Iran, Maher actually lauded President Trump’s actions. He famously lambasted his liberal audience, telling them they “don’t get about liberation.” Maher had stated that Iran was a “fascist theocracy, and nothing in the Middle East was ever going to get better while they were still there f—ing everything up.” 

He even expressed “cautious optimism” about the military offensive, provided Trump didn’t put “boots on the ground.” Maher even suggested that removing much of Iran’s leadership could open the door for “so much happiness” for the Iranian people. His praise was surprising as he often makes fun of Trump’s policies, even triggering insanely long Truth Social rants.

The real-world impact of the Strait of Hormuz situation is hitting people’s wallets hard. The closure has caused a significant surge in prices for various commodities, from fertilizer to gas and oil. According to data from AAA, the national average for gas prices in the U.S. reached $3.68 as of Saturday morning. 

For the administration, if it were to attempt to take control of the Strait, the options are pretty clear but challenging. The U.S. Navy would either need to escort tankers after clearing any mines, or potentially capture Kharg Island. President Trump did point out that Kharg Island was bombed on Friday night, though he noted its oil infrastructure was spared.

Maher’s past makes this current pivot all the more noteworthy. He’s been a vocal critic of military interventions, especially during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He frequently challenged those who supported those conflicts. So, to see him initially praise military action and then quickly pivot to strong criticism over perceived incompetence and economic fallout really highlights the complex nature of the current situation.
