Canadian PM at last confronts uncomfortable truth about Israel’s manipulative approach

Carney says Israel broke the law.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has made strong accusations against Israel over blocked humanitarian aid to Gaza. He said Israel is stopping aid from reaching starving civilians and breaking international law. Carney wants international groups to take control of all aid delivery instead of Israel.

According to Politico, the Prime Minister spoke out late Thursday night about what he called a humanitarian disaster in Gaza. He said Canada condemns Israel’s failure to stop the crisis from getting worse. Carney revealed that many international organizations are holding significant Canadian-funded aid which has been blocked from delivery to starving civilians.

“This denial of humanitarian aid is a violation of international law,” Carney said during his statement. He called for Israel’s control of aid distribution to be replaced by international organizations leading the effort. The Prime Minister made it clear that Canada wants a complete change in how aid reaches Gaza residents.

France joins the pressure as Europe takes harder stance

Carney’s comments came just hours after French President Emmanuel Macron announced a major decision. France will formally recognize Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly in September. This shows Europe is taking a tougher position against Israel’s actions.

The French move caused angry reactions from both Israel and the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a “reward for terror.” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it was a “reckless decision” and “a slap in the face” to victims of the October 7 Hamas attacks.

Aid delivery in Gaza currently happens through UN efforts and the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. But Israel keeps tight security control over the process. This has led to long delays, problems at border crossings, and Palestinians being killed while trying to get aid.

The war in Gaza has been going on for almost two years now. It started after Hamas militants attacked Israeli territory in October 2023, killing more than 1,000 people. Israel’s military response has killed tens of thousands of people in the coastal area where many are now starving.

Carney also repeated Canada’s call for an immediate ceasefire and urged Hamas to release all hostages from their initial attack. He pressed Israel to respect the territorial integrity of the West Bank and Gaza. The Prime Minister said Canada supports a two-state solution for peace in the Middle East. This diplomatic approach reflects Carney’s distinct political style compared to his predecessor. Canada will work in all international forums to achieve this goal., including through the Minister of Foreign Affairs attending the UN High-Level Conference on a Two-State Solution in New York next week.
