President Donald Trump had particularly stinging and pointed critiques for his former allies in the influential conservative commentary space. Candace Owens was on a break at the time, but never one to avoid an internet spectacle, she simply posted on X, “I will be back.” And she did come back.
The president made it clear just how little he thought of Owens, Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, and Alex Jones. In typical Trump fashion, he wished them nothing but failure and financial ruin. But it quickly became clear that Trump was more isolated than many had assumed — even Truth Social turned on him. Carlson responded via a newsletter, but everyone knew the response MAGA was waiting for was Candace Owens.
Owens began by saying she had recently been fixated on “the fragility of empires.” She argued that empires fall when “slaves” begin to command the crowds, adding that while the masses often ask for very little, elites inevitably have their “let them eat cake” moment. She framed her comments as an open letter to Trump.
She then performed a dramatic reading of Trump’s now-infamous Truth Social post, calling it a “stunning break from reality.” In the post, Trump claimed he won in a landslide because MAGA only cares about what he says — and no one else. Owens pushed back, arguing that his rants once resonated because they were grounded in truth, something she suggested is no longer the case.
Watching MAGA fracture from the outside has been fascinating for those who never bought into Trump’s vision of a better America. At one point in her extended critique, Owens said bluntly, “Tucker Carlson is more powerful than you.” She added, “Deep down, I think you know that. And you resent that.”

She then drove the point home by declaring that Trump now belongs to the “Epstein class.” For a time, the fallout from the Iran war had shifted attention away from any lingering discussions about Jeffrey Epstein and Trump. Owens, however, brought that association right back into focus, and now the First Lady has started making seemingly unprompted statements distancing herself from the late sex offender. Somehow, no one in Trump’s orbit appears to have known what Epstein was doing at the time.
Among Trump’s base, the post is now being compared to a “basket of deplorables” moment — an instance where he inadvertently reminded supporters that he sees himself as above them. Owens went as far as telling him directly that “only a fool would have hit send” on that post.
For many outside Trump’s base, however, the post doesn’t even rank among his most outrageous statements — especially considering he recently suggested sending Iran back to the “stone age” while lashing out at nearly every influential figure he’s clashed with.
Nothing has ever seemed beneath Trump’s sense of dignity — or lack thereof. But even he can’t burn the bridges that lead back home and expect the road to remain open. Trump keeps picking fights he has no clear way to end or win — a common misstep for those led by pride.
