‘Completely disgusting’: Omar responds to Trump advisor’s anti-immigrant comments, then draws disturbing historical comparison

They’re not even trying to hide it anymore.

Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota spoke out this weekend about Stephen Miller’s language against immigrants. Miller is a Homeland Security adviser, and Omar said his words remind her of how Nazis talked about Jewish people in Germany. This is a very serious comparison that shows how heated the immigration debate has become.

Miller is known for creating many of Trump’s strict immigration policies. Last month, he wrote inflammatory posts on X after a Wall Street Journal article defended Afghan refugees. The article came out after one refugee allegedly shot two National Guard members in Washington, D.C.

According to HuffPost, Miller responded by saying mass migration changes the country that takes in immigrants. He wrote that people aren’t just bringing individuals, but entire societies. He claimed that migrants and their children recreate the problems and dangers from their home countries.

Miller’s rhetoric echoes dangerous conspiracy theories about immigration

Miller often promotes the “great replacement theory,” which falsely claims that nonwhite immigrants are invading America to replace white people. This racist conspiracy theory has been widely criticized by experts and civil rights groups.

Omar came to the U.S. as a refugee from Somalia. She directly connected Miller’s language to dark historical moments. She said his white supremacist rhetoric reminds her of how Nazis described Jewish people in Germany. The use of such dehumanizing language has serious consequences in today’s digital world.

“When I think about Stephen Miller and his white supremacist rhetoric, it reminds of the way the Nazis described Jewish people in Germany,” she said.

Omar pointed out that America has a history of rejecting immigrants, even Europeans. The U.S. once turned away Jewish refugees and showed hatred toward Irish and Italian immigrants in the past.

This heated language comes as President Trump has increased attacks on immigrants after the National Guard shooting. He stopped all asylum decisions and targeted the Somali community specifically. Trump called Somalia “not even a nation” and said Somali refugees are “garbage” who “complain and do nothing but bitch.”

Omar called the president’s comments completely disgusting, especially since he was talking about American citizens. She said it’s unacceptable for a national leader to use such language. Similar disgusting rhetoric from public figures has sparked controversy in recent months.

Federal immigration operations are now targeting Minnesota’s large Somali community, even though 95% of the state’s 84,000 Somali residents are U.S. citizens. Pro-immigration protesters gathered outside a Minneapolis Target on December 4, 2025, after reports that ICE used their parking lots. Omar stressed that her community members are productive American citizens who contribute to the nation.

Stephen Miller and his wife Katie quickly responded on X without providing evidence, making unsubstantiated claims about the Somali refugee program and deportation support. Omar warned that dehumanizing rhetoric from leaders can lead to dangerous real-world actions.
