The planned transaction involved a cellphone according to the Columbia Police Department. However, the sale quickly turned into an attempted robbery and eventual murder with Burke unfortunately being shot. However, Burke was able to dial 911 and give a detailed description of his attackers before passing away.

The individuals suspected of committing the murder have already been named, Alexis Baumann, Kobe Aust, Joseph Crane, were the three 18-year-olds. The fourth suspect, a juvenile male, has not yet been publicly identified but has been apprehended.

Michael Ryan Burke also sent a heartbreaking final message

While giving an accurate description of his attackers to the 911 operator, Burke was also able to send a heartbreaking farewell text to his family as per the NY Post. He sent a message to his mother and his sister that simply read: “I’m dying and I love you.”

Burke was urgently rushed to a nearby medical center shortly after sending the text but he tragically passed away at the hospital.

Jerry Reifeiss, a friend of Burke’s, spoke highly of him, “He always put people in front of him and wanted to make sure people know how he felt.” He also explained that Burke, “didn’t want to go on to the next life and pass away without providing some information to us that would bring justice to these people and let people know he always loves them.”

The former marine led an exemplar life

In a Facebook post by Mizzuo (The University of Missouri’s official Facebook page) in 2016, Burke gave a little explanation on his life and achievements, writing, “I am a prior service Amphibious Reconnaissance Marine who currently facilitates security for the U.S. Department of State in Baghdad, Iraq.” He also volunteered in “the fight against human trafficking” and double-majored in psychology and sociology at the University of Missouri.

In the Facebook post, Burke went on to describe how important his education was at university, writing, “in my experience, it’s not so much a weapon but the training of the mind that makes a man dangerous.”

All four suspected of Michael Ryan Burke’s murder are currently being held without bond. Baumann, Aust and Crane are in the Boone County Jail, while the juvenile male is in the Boone County Juvenile Office.
