A Fox News captioner made a major blunder during live coverage of a Donald Trump rally this week, and the mistake quickly went viral. The error occurred while President Trump was speaking at an event in Pennsylvania, and viewers immediately noticed the unusual closed captions scrolling across the screen.
According to HuffPost, comedian Desi Lydic, a correspondent for The Daily Show, was among those watching the broadcast closely. She spotted the mistake and highlighted it on social media, drawing widespread attention to the captioning error. The mix-up happened when the captioner wrote “minors” instead of “miners” while Trump was addressing the crowd.
The president had said, “For miners, do we love miners? I love miners.” Without context, the mistake could be confusing, and even alarming – to viewers reading the captions, but it’s easy to see how it happened. The way Trump pronounced “miners” in the clip made it sound very similar to “minors,” which led to the humorous yet unfortunate error.
The captioner’s panic mode became instant comedy gold
The clip quickly became fodder for social media commentary, just like Trump’s online rants, with many poking fun at the unintentional word swap while others noted the challenge of captioning live events in real time. It’s a small but memorable reminder of how even minor errors in live broadcasts can take on a life of their own online.
Lydic was watching Fox News with captions turned on when she saw the error go out live to millions of viewers. The captioner quickly realized the mistake and tried to fix it right away. This led to Lydic’s perfect reaction: “Delete, delete, delete!” The studio audience loved it and responded with big laughs and applause.
Lydic didn’t stop there. She made another joke by showing an image that referenced Trump’s alleged birthday message to Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted sex offender. “We know, we all saw the birthday card,” Lydic said, suggesting the mistake was especially unfortunate given the context.
She also joked about Fox News’ staffing choices, saying, “Whoopsie! That’s what Fox gets for hiring Prince Andrew to do the captions.” The whole moment was caught during her Wednesday monologue.
The captioning error happened during a rally that was supposed to focus on affordability. Lydic pointed out that Trump “got a little off track” during the event. She showed clips of his rally statements, including various names he used for President Joe Biden. Trump also claimed that Black people “know a scam better than anybody.”
Lydic noted that the captioning mistake at least distracted people from other news stories. “At least no one was thinking about the Epstein files anymore,” she said. The viral moment must have left Trump’s fans and staff wishing they could delete it permanently, similar to other cringe-worthy internet moments.
It’s surprising that a simple captioning error became the biggest talking point from a major political rally, but that’s what happens when live TV goes wrong.
