President Trump announced the formation of the “Board of Peace” for Gaza, but the rollout was immediately overshadowed by fresh conflict as Israeli strikes killed nine people in the area. This news comes months after Israel and Hamas had agreed to a fragile ceasefire following two years of intense fighting. It’s certainly disappointing to see such a high-stakes peace effort hit a wall right out of the gate, especially when people are hoping for real stability.
President Trump took to Truth Social to share the news, making it clear this was a massive undertaking. “It is my Great Honor to announce that THE BOARD OF PEACE has been formed,” the president posted. He promised that the members of the Board would be announced shortly, adding, “I can say with certainty that it is the Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled at any time, any place.”
Less than an hour and a half later, President Trump declared that the peace process had officially moved into its next stage. He cited special envoy Steve Witkoff and announced they had “OFFICIALLY entered the next phase of Gaza’s 20-Point Peace Plan.” This second phase focuses on transitioning Gaza from a ceasefire to full demilitarization, technocratic governance, and eventual reconstruction, per The Hill.
Trump really doesn’t know what he’s doing
As Chairman of the Board of Peace, the president stated he is backing a new governing structure: a “newly appointed Palestinian Technocratic Government,” which is called the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza. This committee is expected to govern the territory during its transition period, supported by the Board’s High Representative. President Trump stressed that these Palestinian leaders are “unwaveringly committed to a PEACEFUL future.”
The core of this new phase is a massive demand for Hamas. The president stated that with the support of Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar, the U.S. will secure a “COMPREHENSIVE Demilitarization Agreement with Hamas.” This requires the militant group to surrender “ALL weapons” and agree to the dismantling of “EVERY tunnel” they have built.
President Trump’s language was uncompromising regarding compliance. “Hamas must IMMEDIATELY honor its commitments, including the return of the final body to Israel, and proceed without delay to full Demilitarization,” he wrote. He concluded his statement with a clear warning: “As I have said before, they can do this the easy way, or the hard way. The people of Gaza have suffered long enough. The time is NOW. PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH.”
This announcement received immediate praise from those close to the administration. Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and a special adviser on the Middle East, posted on X that the day “marks a historic new beginning in the Middle East.” Special Envoy Witkoff also used X to confirm the shift to the second phase, noting that Hamas is expected to “fully comply with its obligations, including the immediate return of the final deceased hostage.” He added a serious warning, noting that “Failure to do so will bring serious consequences.”
However, the reality on the ground quickly complicated the announcement. Even as the peace framework was being unveiled, Israel carried out strikes that killed nine people in Gaza on Thursday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threw cold water on the peace plan’s immediate impact, calling Witkoff’s announcement largely symbolic. Netanyahu also referred to the newly announced governing committee of Palestinians as a “declarative move.”
