Donald Trump claims he was ‘blindsided’ by Melania Trump’s Epstein statement. But no one is buying the story

Stephanie Grisham, the former White House press secretary, publicly expressed her skepticism on regarding claims from Donald Trump that he was completely unaware of the first lady’s plans to address her past ties to Jeffrey Epstein. It is quite a bold claim, and Grisham made it clear she isn’t buying it.

Trump told MS NOW that he did not know anything about Melania Trump’s statement, a development that a reporter for the outlet shared on X. Grisham, who served as the first lady’s chief of staff, noted that she found the suggestion of total ignorance implausible. Per The Hill, she argued that at the very least, Melania would have provided a heads-up. Grisham stated that she called BS on the president, claiming he knew nothing about the situation.

Even if the president had been informed, Grisham suggested it likely wouldn’t have changed the outcome. She described Melania as a very strong and independent woman who follows through on her intentions regardless of input from her husband or advisers. This perspective aligns with reports from others close to the first lady, who noted that she was increasingly frustrated by ongoing online chatter regarding her connection to Epstein.

Some White House officials were reportedly stunned by the timing of the remarks, but sources close to her indicated that she simply reached a point where she felt enough was enough. Melania delivered her remarks from the White House Grand Foyer, where she explicitly denied being a victim and labeled Epstein as disgraceful. 

She stated that the lies linking her to him needed to end immediately. She also denied any connection to Epstein’s accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, and rejected claims that she was introduced to her husband by Epstein.

Per CNN, one official noted that Melania is not political and does not concern herself with the political angles of such matters. Instead, she was seeing stories being amplified and wanted to go on the record with a firm denial. Her legal team reportedly believed that having this denial on the record could be beneficial. Despite the desire to put the rumors to rest, the decision to speak out has arguably kept the topic in the headlines.

Her remarks included a call for Congress to hold public hearings that would allow Epstein survivors to testify under oath. This specific request created a unique situation, as it directly conflicted with the messaging coming from Trump. 

The response to her call for action was immediate and bipartisan. Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, encouraged the committee chairman to schedule a public hearing following the first lady’s request. Similarly, GOP Rep. Tim Burchett expressed his interest in working with the first lady on the issue. 

Although not everyone viewed the call for hearings as a simple solution. Some victim advocates expressed concern that shifting the burden onto survivors could be a deflection of responsibility rather than a path to justice.

As the conversation continues, the disconnect between the first lady’s public stance and the president’s claim of ignorance remains a point of interest. Whether or not the president was truly in the dark, the first lady’s decision to speak has certainly altered the discourse surrounding the Epstein files. 

For now, the focus has shifted toward how the government might respond to her request for Congressional action, even as the administration continues to navigate the fallout from the ongoing scrutiny.
