Donald Trump has proven yet again that he is a rude and incompetent manchild with all the grace and decorum of a rotten fart. The U.S. president recently attended a state banquet in the U.K. where he demanded that the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, be excluded from the event.
Speaking on Air Force One on Thursday, Trump said that he “didn’t want” Khan at the state banquet which was hosted by King Charles at Windsor Castle. He also described him as being “among the worst mayors in the world.”
The BBC reports that Sir Sadiq did not attend the event, nor did he seek an invitation. This directly contrasts with Trump’s version of events as the president claimed that the London Mayor had wanted to be there but “I asked that he not be there.”
Comments made by Trump sow fear and division
Being a world leader requires tact and respect. Sometimes you may have to work with people you don’t like, but you can’t just throw your toys out of the pram and exclude a significant political figure from an event you’re not even hosting, especially when you’re in their country. But of course, Donald Trump can get away with it, because he’s, you know, Donald Trump.
A source close to the mayor said that the comments made by Trump sowed “fear and division,” going on to say that “This includes talking down our great capital city.”
The feud has been going on a long time
The pair have been feuding for a number of years now, with Donald Trump firing shots at Khan, most recently in July of this year when he called the mayor out for having “done a terrible job.” However, it goes as far back as at least 2015, when Khan condemned Trump’s idea to ban muslims travelling to the U.S.
In 2017, Trump, then in his first term, criticized the London Mayor’s handling of a terror attack in the U.K. capital. Then, two years later, Trump would take another swipe, calling Khan “a stone-cold loser.” The mayor retaliated by accusing the president of stirring up far-right politics. That same year he also greenlit the infamous “Trump baby” balloon to be flown in the capital during the president’s visit.
This just seems like another example of Trump throwing a hissy fit after being put in his place by someone with whom he has no power to silence. Unlike vocal critics in the U.S. like Jimmy Kimmel, the president cannot just pressure Khan into silence so he has to resort to bullying and behaving like a baby. Perhaps it’s time to shake the dust off that old Trump balloon and fly it around London once again.
