There is a lot on Donald Trump’s mind – namely, how to pretend he is finally seeing Vladimir Putin’s true colors, targeting sick and vulnerable children who are legally U.S. citizens, and of course, making sure that women lose their freedom and their rights under his regime. And oh, ensuring that his time in the White House is long enough to make these dreams come true.
Trump has a history of trying to bypass set laws that have been put in place for the smooth functioning of the nation in order to get what he wants. So, when he boasted about there being “methods” of bypassing the U.S. Constitution whose 22nd Amendment mandates that one can’t be the president for more than two terms, his words were not taken lightly. But the man is also known to make lofty claims, ones that he is quick to call “exaggerations” when he is unable to fulfill them. And yet, when the POTUS sat down for a new interview with TIME magazine, and asked to explain his claims about bypassing the constitution, he committed even further and agreed that yes, his team has and is discussing “loopholes” to the law.
“I’d rather not discuss that now, but as you know, there are some loopholes that have been discussed that are well known.”
He proceeded to not-so-subtly dodge the next questions about his teased loophole, possibly being Vice President J.D. Vance resigning from the role of president after winning the 2028 election and tried to redirect the attention to his “tricky and pretty tough” cognitive test, which he “aced” unlike “every other president.” Unable to resist the temptation, he tried to retract his previous claim about the “loopholes” being discussed and claimed that even though people are “begging” him to run again, he hasn’t “looked at even the possibility.” Yep, just like how he said he doesn’t know anything about Project 25 and its draconian policies, only to introduce policies that bear uncomfortable similarity to it.
Why does Donald Trump need a third term?
Well, there is a lot that needs extra time to be morphed to Trump’s whims and fancies – like the systematic dismantling of women’s rights and freedom in the country. And this time, it is targeting the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which was put in place decades ago to ensure that lenders do not discriminate against women based on whether they are married, single, or widowed. Before this act, women could only get credit cards or a loan if they had a spouse or male relative to co-sign.
Now, Trump’s executive order can’t undo the law, but federal agencies following his order blindly or voluntarily would subject women to gender discrimination by making it harder and in some cases, impossible, to get credit, loans, or mortgages under biased lending practices. An extension of this EO would see them unable to challenge and fight this injustice as well.
In short, decades of progress and revolution, where women moved towards achieving financial stability and independence, went down the drain because one insecure man couldn’t digest their empowerment. What is more terrifying is that this is hardly the first step that Trump has taken to destroy every positive step America has taken to liberate women from systemic oppression.
He has already started the work, like the Hyde Amendment, which effectively ended federal funding for elective abortions and revoked previous executive orders that expanded access to reproductive healthcare services. Also, he weakened the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) during his first term and plans to dismantle it completely this time, thus severely undermining the enforcement of equal pay for men and women and anti-discrimination laws. This would eventually lead to widening of the gender pay gap, particularly affecting women of color who already face judgment at the workplace and suffer partiality.
