Earlier this week, Donald Trump appeared at a rally just outside of Des Moines, Iowa. You might wonder why a sitting president in his second term, who cannot seek re-election, is still holding campaign rallies, but I suppose he simply likes the attention.
Trump beat an all-too-familiar drum to the assembled crowd. You know the drill: all the things that are currently going wrong are actually Joe Biden’s fault, that the economy is secretly booming and you just haven’t noticed it yet, and that (as Trump put it), “inflation has been defeated“. Uh-huh.
While the majority of the crowd is still dyed-in-the-wool Trump cultists (why else would they be there on a freezing January evening?), it seems that for some, reality is intruding into the MAGA fantasy.
MAGA is restless
At one point in his speech, Trump insisted that gas is down to $1.85 a gallon. An attendee instantly corrected him, shouting “No, $2.63!” (and, indeed, it was $2.65 at the gas station down the street from the rally):
OUCH: After Trump told an Iowa crowd that gas is $1.85 per gallon, an attendee shouted, “No, $2.63!”

Even Iowa is sick of lies.
The press also quizzed Iowans before the rally to see if enthusiasm for Trump is still high:

“He needs to get his act together and our representatives here in Iowa need to stop following his lead. I’m not voting Republican again.”
She confirmed she’d voted for Trump and continued:
“First time around he did a good job but then he got stupid. Means that he just changed. It’s all about him. He thinks he’s god and he’s gonna take over the world.
The vast majority of MAGA are ride-or-die for Trump, no matter what. They’ll watch Trump burn down their towns, livelihoods, and families and still insist he’s got their best interests at heart.
But it’s safe to say that Trump is rapidly shedding the softer support that won him the 2024 election. Americans up and down the country took one look at the deeply uncharismatic warmonger Kamala Harris and understandably concluded that another round of Trump might not be so bad.
We don’t have to wait too long to find out if those soft Trump voters have changed their minds, as the midterms are shaping up to be an electoral slaughterhouse for MAGA. The future still isn’t bright, but there might just be a glimmer of light on the horizon.
