Donald Trump intervenes in Savannah Guthrie mom kidnapping, promises to ‘deploy all resources’

Donald Trump could use some good press right now, so it’s unsurprising that he’s personally intervened in the shocking kidnapping and ransom of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother.

84-year-old Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home over the weekend, with detectives quickly concluding that she’d been abducted rather than merely going missing. Multiple media outlets then received what appeared to be ransom notes from the kidnapper or kidnappers, asking for millions of dollars in Bitcoin for her safe return.

Now Trump has reached out to Guthrie personally and assured her that he’s deploying every law enforcement resource he can to get her mom back. Guthrie thanked Trump for his call, and thanked the local and federal authorities working on the case.

Trump himself then took to Truth Social to underline that he’s flexing the full arm of the law:

I spoke with Savannah Guthrie, and let her know that I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and Local Law Enforcement’s, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY. We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely. The prayers of our Nation are with her and her family. GOD BLESS AND PROTECT NANCY!

All this is a rare instance of Trump trying to do some good, though frankly, this is a lay-up from a public relations perspective. All Trump has to do is make a few phone calls, and he looks good, though usually even that’s beyond him. But hey, it’s not nothing!

Is this putting too much heat on the kidnappers?

The only downside is that having the president directly intervene in a kidnapping greatly increases the heat on the kidnappers. That, in turn, raises the chances that they’ll conclude that keeping their victim alive isn’t worth the ransom, dispose of her, and try to flee.

As for the investigation? Well, the sheriff’s department has confirmed they still don’t have a suspect or person of interest in the case. The FBI is now involved, with Trump said to be personally ordering more federal agents to be assigned to the case to assist.

In this rare instance, we can only side with Trump and desperately hope this story has a happy resolution. Nancy Guthrie is a vulnerable elderly woman reliant on medication to stay alive, and every second she spends in captivity with her kidnappers, her situation becomes more dangerous.
