President Donald Trump addressed supporters at a Monday night rally in Youngstown, Ohio. The appearance focused on boosting Republican Sen. Jon Husted in his close contest against Democratic former Sen. Sherrod Brown. Trump also campaigned for Vivek Ramaswamy, the party’s nominee for governor.
According to Mediaite, Trump used part of his speech to describe the consequences he said would follow if Democrats took control of the House, the Senate, and the White House. He told the audience that in that situation he “will be the last Republican president.”
He framed the outcome as one that would permanently change the country’s political structure. Trump said Democrats want to end the Senate and that they want to basically destroy the country, adding that if they get in they will do that and will be able to do that.
Trump describes claimed shifts in electoral votes and the Supreme Court
Trump went further by outlining what he presented as specific steps Democrats would take after a future presidential race. He said that if one of these lunatics got in, people would look at him right now and conclude that he is going to be the last Republican president in the history of the country. He repeated the line, stating, “I will be. I will be. I will be the last Republican president.”
As the reason, Trump claimed Democrats would add about 12 more electoral votes. He also said they would add four more senators and approximately 10 more congresspeople. In the same stretch of remarks he asserted that they are going to rig the Supreme Court through just a lot of people and that they want to put a lot of people on the court.
Trump stated that the number of justices would rise from nine to 23. His comments on the court came amid ongoing attention to how he has reacted when the justices rule against him. In one instance he reacted strongly after the court blocked his tariffs.
He then returned to a longstanding position of his, calling again for the elimination of the Senate filibuster. He said removing the 60-vote threshold would let Republicans pass the SAVE Act, a measure the House has already approved but that has not cleared the Senate.
The president described the legislation as one that would require proof of citizenship when someone registers to vote and photo identification when casting a ballot. He told the crowd, “And we’ll never lose an election again because we’ll have really good safeguards.” He continued, “You’ll have voter ID, you’ll have proof of citizenship. Everything that you want. That will be legitimate. Because they can’t win an election without cheating.”
Trump’s remarks on expanding the court also followed periods when justices he nominated did not support his positions. He has questioned the loyalty of his Supreme Court picks after tariff-related rulings.
