Venezuela is facing an uncertain future. On one hand, many Venezuelans are relieved that they no longer live under Nicolas Maduro. On the other hand, it doesn’t exactly bode well for your independence when a foreign power can kidnap your head of state and replace him with an obedient puppet.
And, given the United States’ miserable history of exploiting and manipulating Central and South America, it definitely doesn’t bode well when it’s Donald Trump doing it.
Trump and his goons are greedily prepping to strip Venezuela of its natural resources, and it’s safe to say the future for the regular Venezuelan on the street isn’t exactly sunny. But, if Trump has anything to say about it, they might not be Venezuelans for long!
Apparently, Trump is eager to add another star to the flag and push forward plans that’ll absorb Venezuela into the United States of America. Fox News’ John Robert confirmed the plans, saying Trump himself had explained them to him:
FOX NEWS' JOHN ROBERTS: When I talked to the president this morning, he kinda surprised me because he said, 'John, I just want to tell you. I'm very serious about this. I'm serious about beginning a process to make Venezuela the 51st state.'

“I was talking to the president this morning, it was just before the Oval Office event, and he kinda kinda surprised me a little because he said, “John, I just want to tell you. I’m very serious about this. So you can talk about this. I’m serious about beginning a process to make Venezuela the 51st state.”
Sorry, Puerto Ricans, Venezuelans get to be Americans first!
Trump adding a 51st state to the union seems to be a low-key ambition of his, with Greenland, Canada, DC, and (obviously) Puerto Rico all candidates for statehood. But hey, maybe Venezuela is going to jump the line and become the first state of the union in South America?
A new state would be a huge feather in Trump’s cap and, at least from his perspective, would cement his historic legacy. But it appears he hasn’t thought through what making 31 million Venezuelans into Americans would mean
After all, if Venezuela were made a state and Venezuelans became full US citizens, every Venezuelan would have the right to travel to, live in, and work in the continental United States. Which… well, doesn’t exactly sound like the kind of policy that’s going to make MAGA happy.
On top of that, Venezuelans are significantly more left-leaning than the average American, so simply incorporating Venezuela into America may tip the electoral scales towards the Democrats in multiple key districts. Perhaps they might settle for making them second-class citizens, as in, you get to stay in Venezuela and we get your oil.
If Trump is serious, then who knows? Venezuela becoming a state might actually happen. If it does, then expect every other Central and South American country to become a little more paranoid about their sovereignty. You can imagine Trump concluding Mexico might be way better off if he were running the show…
