A major political battle just erupted in Washington, DC, as a House Democrat officially filed articles of impeachment against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Representative Haley Stevens, a Democrat representing Michigan, announced the move on Wednesday, making good on a vow she had made back in September. Stevens isn’t holding back, arguing that Secretary Kennedy has totally failed in his role and is a danger to the country.
She stated plainly in an X post that she believes the Secretary has completely abandoned his duties. Stevens wrote, “Today, I formally introduced articles of impeachment against Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. RFK Jr. has turned his back on science and the safety of the American people. Michiganders cannot take another day of his chaos,” according to Fox News.
If you ask me, those are incredibly strong words, and it certainly ratchets up the political tension surrounding President Trump’s cabinet. However, the Secretary isn’t letting the political drama distract him from his mission. Andrew Nixon, a spokesperson for the HHS, quickly dismissed the effort as a waste of time. Nixon told reporters that Secretary Kennedy remains focused on his core duties and lowering healthcare costs. He said that the Secretary is “focused on the work of improving Americans’ health and lowering costs, not on partisan political stunts.”
RFK Jr is having to answer for a lot of things
What’s really shocking is that this isn’t even the first impeachment effort targeting President Trump’s cabinet this week. This move comes just days after another Michigan Democrat, Representative Shri Thanedar, filed articles of impeachment against War Secretary Pete Hegseth. Having two key cabinet members facing this kind of action in such a short period signals serious turbulence for the administration. Frankly, this level of instability isn’t great for getting important work done.
The accusations against Secretary Hegseth are arguably even more serious than the charges facing Secretary Kennedy. Representative Thanedar pointed to reports alleging that Hegseth issued orders to “kill everybody” aboard a small vessel believed to be involved in drug trafficking. Thanedar asserted that this conduct is completely unacceptable and potentially illegal.
Thanedar did not mince words when discussing the Secretary’s use of military force. “Pete Hegseth has been using the United States military to extrajudicially assassinate people without evidence of any crime,” Thanedar stated. He added that former military attorneys have suggested that Hegseth’s actions could constitute war crimes. Thanedar concluded his statement by saying, “We cannot allow his reprehensible conduct to continue, which is why I have filed these articles to impeach him.”
It’s definitely worth noting the political timing of these high-profile moves against two cabinet secretaries. Both Representative Stevens and Representative Thanedar are Michigan Democrats who are currently facing highly contested Democratic primaries ahead of the 2026 elections. While they insist these impeachment efforts are solely about accountability, the cynical side of me thinks this timing is awfully convenient for generating buzz during a difficult primary campaign.
